XL12 'Close' button doesn't shutdown XL

Why does XL12 not close when clicking the close button. It asks to save
files as expected but doesn't shut down after choosing Yes or No. IOW,
it behaves as though the Cancel button was clicked.

Actually, this happens by default! Are you suggesting there's a way to
prevent this? If so, how would I do that?

Append the /e to your Command line

This is mine for Excel 12.....................

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" /e

You need the double quotes as is. Also note the space before the /e

I will do this through My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types for whichever
particular version of Excel I want as default.

Else, just create shortcuts to your various versions.

Explorer? Also, what changed in XL12 that it doesn't shut down until
there's no workbooks open?

When d-click on a file in Windows Explorer, the file will open without a Book1
in whichever version of Excel is default.

i.e. default is Excel 11.........d-click on an *.xlsx file and the file will
open in Excel 11 after converting. Assumes you have the compatibility checker
installed.

I cannot replicate Excel not closing when multiple workbooks are open and none
of them need saving.

Yes, I do have the compatibility checker installed. This also works as
you suggest.

Strange, but I've never been able to close XL2007 unless there were no
workbooks open. Maybe somethings buggy with my copy of MSO12 because it
happens on my test machines as well!

The UI remains in view with no workbooks open.

I only get the "Do you want to save..." msg if the active workbook has
formulas (no changes made). Otherwise, this behavior is as expected but
after the last workbook closes the UI still remains until I click the
'X' again.

Not fully investigated, but it appears that xl2010 does the same thing
.... ie; if there is a modified workbook open when I click the 'X' Excel
does not exit after I dismiss the "Do you want to save..." dialog. (I
don't normally try to exit Excel with open worlbooks; but that did
happen to me this morning.)

Tested with three open workbooks.

One with no changes made and two with changes made.

Closed Application and got the "do you want to save" for the altered workbooks.

Click "Yes to all" and Excel saves the workbooks and closes.

Click No twice and Excel closes.

I cannot get Excel to stay open when it has been asked to close.

Have no idea what makes my setup different.
