I've been having the same trouble as some other folks here last year, but i just got the macbook and had 08 on there for a while. Just recently it started to append the files i download with the .xla for excel, .dot for word and .pot for ppts... the problem is i can't open up the documents.. does someone know how to fix this?

Yup - update Mac OS X, and Safari, and make sure Office08 is fully
updated.

You should be able to open the docs from FIle/Open. You can always
delete the extra extension in Finder.
