An XLR file is a Microsoft Works spreadsheet and not an Excel workbook.
It's been a long time since I've dabbled in Works so I can't say without a
doubt that you can save a Works spreadsheet as an Excel workbook, but you
should be able to open it.
Check out the following Microsoft web page for all the gory details:

Thanks Kevin, I guess this is my delema.. The xlr file was posted on an
excel sheet...(I don't have microsoft works programs in this computer) I
shows in "my documents" as an xlr file. When I ckick to open it, it opens on
an excel worksheet. I've transfered the file(s) to a new computer which did
have the ms works programs. hence the xlr files went to this program. I've
installed ms office, uninstalled msworks, retransfered the excel files to the
new computer but after doing that, nothing will open the files.. It shows ms
word as a which program would you like to open this file with thing but when
it's tried all I get is alot of yyyyooooand so on. can't seem to push my
that was easy button for this one. jThanks again...
