xls & xlx all open as read only

Actually all worksheets I open, no mater what extension I save them as, open as read only. My only work-around has been to copy the sheets to a new workbook and save them as a new document.
Anyone have any ideas how I might fix this?

I hat to ask the obvious, but where are these files? Is there enough free
space on that volume, and do you write permission?

Most of our files are on the web in Egnyte; but I save them to my desktop or my docs folder and have the same problem. A coworker sent an xlsx as an attachment yesterday & I had no trouble saving it under a new name. I do have write permission on all files.
Free space on the volume is a good question... at times when trying to save an excel doc it will save but gives me a message that there is not enough memory to keep the file open and to close it and re-open. We have lots of storage space available so that message puzzles me.
Thanks.

You need to have write permission in the directory where the file resides on
the server. What you need to check is the space remaining when the folder
containing the files is selected. Sometimes that allocation is near the
limit even when the volume it resides on seem to have plenty of space. Are
the files marked read-only recommended? This is an Excel attribute set when
the file is saved.
