xls_auto_files

My PC crashed. I paid someone to salvage all the data possible. I now have a MAC with the parallels feature. I have Office Mac 2004. When I attempt to open any of my old excel files, I get a message, "File format is not valid". However, I can clearly see that the files are some type of excel extension. They are denoted as xls_auto_file. What do I need to do to recover these files in my 2004 excel for Mac?

Those are probably autorecover files - not workbooks. IIRC, they contain
only changes, so you'd have to have the original .xls file.
