.xlsx files not reopening

Help.

I had a large 20M .xls data file containing important information that loaded in Excel 2008 and saved fine in .xlsx, though the size was only 6M. The problem is that now it won't open at all. It gets half way and then hangs. Is there any way that I can rectify this? Or change the format back to .xls without opening the document? I have a back-up, but it will take me at least a day to re-enter all the stuff I entered into the new .xlsx version.

Thanks

Hi,

Will the document open in NeoOffice?

Dear Jim

I downloaded NeoOffice and, although it took an age, the file eventually loaded and I was able to save it in various formats. Saving it in opensource format produced a file of just 1.3M; saving it in .xls format produced a file of 6.4M which could be read by both Office 2004 and 2008; but when I saved it again as an .xlsx file it still wouldn't open in 2008.

Anyway, my data were saved and I'm extremely grateful to both you and the makers of NeoOffice.

Many thanks.

I'm curious whether others are having similar problems. I just saved
an xls file as an xlsx file for the first time. It told me something
I had done prevented it from being saved as an xls file any more.
Now, like the previous author, I cannot open the xlsx file. It
hangs. It's been trying right now for about 10 minutes. The original
xls file was 100 K. When it created the xlsx file, it became 3.4 MB.

I can go back to my old version and try reentering my changes, but if
it forces me to create an xlsx file again, I'm in trouble.

Any words of advice?

Nothing should *prevent* you from saving as an .xls file. You may get a
warning that some features may not be available in the .xls version if
you do (i.e., if you use an XL08-only feature/function).

Try opening XL with the Shift key down, then attempt to open the .xlsx
file. Does it open?

For those of you encountering this problem: Do your workbooks contain pivot
tables? Is there any way you can share the affected workbooks with me?

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat,
I have the same problem, and YES my workbook has pivot tables.

It's not easy for me to share it (11.1 MB originally) but I'm hoping some fix is coming soon.

Could you let us know if something's going to be done about this problem.

I've created .xlsx files in MS Office 2007 and recently converted to the
Mac. Every time I try to open the imported file, I get an error message that
the file is corrupted.

the file does have pivot tables.

from reading these lists, I'm not alone out here.

We're doing everything we can to address issues like these. We're currently
working on a fix for the related problem when copying pivot tables. If there
are other different scenarios we want to get to the bottom of them. Is it
possible for you to share a file that has this problem with me? If so,
please send directly to (e-mail address removed). If not, could you describe
the contents of the file and at what point (as best as you can remember) the
file stopped opening?

Thanks,

Pat

Hello I am using office for mac 2008 on macOS 10.5.3. I have the exact
same problem as the one
described above. I try to open an xls file created in a computer
running windows. The file contains
several sheets. One of them is based on pivot tables. My mac starts to
process the file but after
some minutes it stops to show any progress and becomes slow in other
processes.

The interesting thing is that I asked from one of my colleagues
running office in a computer running
windows, to open the file then eliminate the pivot table (copy-paste
special-values) and save a new
version. I am able to open this new version correctly in my mac.

Another thing that I notice is that excel for mac 2008 is considerably
slower than excel for windows
when i make calculations (especially with vlookup function). DO you
have any idea about this?
I hope to have some solution about all this as soon as possible.

Sorry but I cannot send you the two versions of the xls mentioned
above. It contains some sensitive
data.

I'm having a similar problem on Mac Excel, but I do not have pivot tables. I
created a file and saved it as an xlsx (the first time I haven't saved things
as xls). When I went to reopen it, it said the file Excel cannot open this
file. The file might have been damaged or modified from its original format.
Luckily I had a backup, but unluckily I didn't take the step to make a
backup of the backup. Sure enough, 2 days later, and now the backup won't
open either. I will never use xlsx again and I may have to quit using Excel.
This was days and days of work that is now lost. Is there anything I can do
to get it back? I'll try the tool mentioned earlier in this post.

If you can send me a copy of the file I might be able to help.

Thanks,
