I format a cell currency as £ and save it in the new xlxs format. When I open up the file again the cell currency is now formatted as $ again

Any ideas anyone ?

Hmm... I can't reproduce that here.

When you say "format a cell currency as £" are you talking about a
custom format, or are you changing the Currency style?

Does the same thing happen if you save it as an .xls file?

Create a spreadsheet and format the values as £ from the FORMAT CELLS > NUMBER > CURRENCY option. Save and reload. All values are in $ from the Custom menu.

I get this same problem and cant seem to fix it. I get this whether I use the currency option or if I use custom to do it. Is really becoming a pain and I cant find any way around this problem. Hoping for some ideas?

I have this problem with new spreadsheets created in office 2008.
But worksheets imported from my PC are ok.
The only way i can keep the £ sign is to format using the currency icon on the toolbar.
What a pain!!!

Yes, exactly the same problem here. New xlxs documents always revert to $, but converted xls documents retain the £ symbol.

Admittedly, it's a minor problem in the grand scheme of things, but very annoying nonetheless.

I too have this problem on my Mac - its driving me nuts! I have no answers, only adding to the volume, having tried everything. It affects my old 2004 versions too, once converted.

This is a really annoying problem, especially on complex sheets with differing formats.

Please find a fix quickly and make it available on an automatic update.

This problem is driving me up the wall, every time I need to copy a
spreadsheet to my workplace PCs via a memory stick all the currency
symbols have changed to $ I have to re-format it back to the £ symbol,
which can take an age. Aaaargh. Hurry up and fix it. Please.

Hi,

As a temporary work-around have you tried NeoOffice? It's free
