XP and Japanese

I am working with an application that outputs data to word document. Some
of the names are in Japanese and there is one JP character in particular
that shows up as '_}'.

The character is created by selecting katana input from the IME and typing
'ma' then hitting return. The JP character shows up fine in the application
but always shows up as '_}' in MS Word.

Has anyone seen this or knows how to handle it?
