XP Freezes When Saving a Word Doc

M

Mike Hartsough

A couple days ago, seemingly out of nowhere, when I save any Word .doc file,
Word freezes and takes the whole PC with it. The time display in the lower
right corner of the screen keeps updating, and the mouse pointer works, but I
can't click anything. If I enter Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get the "Windows Security"
box, but no matter what I click on, it simply returns to the desktop screen
without doing what I clicked.

I tried a "Save As" once, and there were no problems. But I then did a
"Save" on that new file and everything crashed.

On one occasion I was able to click the "Close" button on the Word window
before it crashed the PC, but the PC ran extremely slowly afterward.

Help?

Thanks,
Mike

I deleted all "networked printers" and it still crashed.

I tried deleting the ~*.do* files, and an interesting thing happened - when
the Search completed, I clicked "Select All", then clicked the big red X, and
the Explorer window froze.

Try a fresh reboot and before opening any apps, go to the user temp folder
and delete all files. Theoretically, the folder should be empty (except for
possibly one or two files created by the AV which won't let you delete
anyway), so delete all its contents.

Reinstall the printer and set as Windows Default because Word MUST have a
printer driver locally installed to work.

Terry:

I implemented both suggestions and Word is now working fine.

Thanks a bunch for the help!
