XP, Office 2000 Professional, OCR

Hi!
I have XP on board (came with the computer) and installed
Office 2000 Professional.
I have an HP T-45 all-in-one.
I try to scan documents OCR so that I can later edit the
text, but the silly thing won't.
I can't change the settings either (the setting changy
thing is not accessible.)
I also got WordPerfect with my computer.
Any ideas how I can scan so that I can later edit?
