xp/office 2000

I'm wanting to update from windows 98 to xp pro and I am
wondering if my current install of office 2000 will be
compatible with the update.
Also, does the update feature to windows xp from 98 work
safely, or would it be just as easy to reformat and start
from scratch? Thanks
