XP Office General (Workgroup) Templates crashing my network

Does anyone know why my network is locked solid the instant anyone clicks on
the 'General Templates' link in Word XP or Excel XP?

All the templates are held in a single folder on a server.

If shortcuts to the individual templates are put on each desktop this opens
a new document fine.
