XP-Pro Service Pack updates: unable to read XL, Word,PPT

I am unable to open any XL, Word, PPT files following Service pack updates.
After repeatedly removing updates and orginal XP-Pro, re-installed XP-Pro
2002, problem goes away temporarily. After a few hours, problem returns
saying "can't open files".
