XP students and teachers wrong version wont implement patches

I purchased XP students and Teachers from a major
retailer. I have the cds with hologram and product key.
It is fully activated. The problem is that I cannot
upgrade past sp2. The problem seems to be in the version
number. (similar to the problem bootleggers had with
sp1). How do I get past this to download the security
updates? Have they decided not to allow updates to this
software to induce us to buy the full version?

Updates install just fine with ALL versions of Office, from 97 upwards. Why
do you think that Microsoft would withdraw support from their most recent
product but still support older and obsolete versions????

Not sure why they would do it. Perhaps b/c of the low cost, lack of upgrade
potential. They also do not provide the two incident calls that the other
versions get according to the website. Not to mention the fact that the
XPs&T does not have a listing in the "locate your product" page
documentation while S&T 2003 does.
whether it was intentional or not, I can't get around the fact that I am
unable to update. the install fails every time. The error message says
that it did not find the expected version of the software. based on a
knowledgbase article for the sp1 failure this only occurs when you have a
pirated or beta copy. This is weird because I bought a licensed version, it
is activated and the first two service packs opened and installed. The
problem seems to be in the product version in the install file. Apparently
xpS&T has a different version number than standard. I have tried
downloading from the update page and downloading to my computer and then
applying to no avail. I have searched this newsgroup many times with no
reference to a fix for this. Xp does a few quirky things I would love to
get resolved. Any thoughts on a workaround?
