My customer has a problem which I can duplicate on our own network (Windows
XP Pro workstation and Windows 2000 Server). XP's Windows Explorer, if
opened/displaying the same network directory where the excel files resides,
will slow down the saving of the files significantly: from 30 seconds when
explorer is closed to 90 seconds when explorer is opened in that directory.
That time is for the saving of a huge Excel file (20 Megs). We would
probably not have noticed it with regular (small) files.
It is not a question of how the file is opened, either through Windows
Explorer or through Excel file/open menu. It is a question of Windows
Explorer having its current browsing endpoint in the same NETWORK directory
where resides the Excel file we are currently working on. On our own
network, we would get a 19 seconds vs. 72 seconds with the same file when
Explorer is displaying or not the directory. It does that with Office 2000
and Office XP (and we still have to confirm that with another customer who
is using Office 97).
The common ground seems to be Windows XP's Explorer and Windows 2000 Server
when saving Excel files.
Since this customer works with very big files, taking about 3 times longer
to save a file is a big problem (his co-worker with an old computer running
Windows 98 doesn't experience the problem with the same files...).
The workaround is to close XP's Windows Explorer or move it to another
folder when saving. Is there any other fix we could use? The workstation
is up to date with patches and service pack and the server may be a month
behind current updates.
