XP Word / Excel "my documents" takes 70 seconds to open

Clicking to open My Documents in 2002 XP Word or Excel takes 70 seconds to
open. Outlook opens normally. This just began.

I defragged and "checked the volume for errors" but still the same. I have
1gig of memory with 550 mg free. 80 gig hard drive with 55 gig available.

Any ideas why it takes so long for "my documents" to open??

This began a few weeks ago. Saving a doc is swift and opening and closing
the program is normal too.

if you haven't added many programs since it used to work fine, I suggest
you try a system restore to a point before the program began.

I would make sure my antivirus program does not have any Office plug-ins
enabled. See this, for example:

Hi

Please check the amount of docs you have in the Mydocuments folder.

I dont know your machine specs but I once had a similar problem. Had 18
GB in mydocs folder and it took forever to open. I moved 9 GB to a new
folder I created on my drive and problem was solved.

I also saw that network shares that contains huge amount of data caused
my explorer to hang.
