xp word save as not responding

when i try to save an edited document to a server and use the 'save as' menu
function, the message is that it is 'not responding' and the drop down box
disappears. fully patched and all service packs applied to Word 2003. any
ideas?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
