Yet another auto sequence question

Hello again.

You all helped me figure out my problem in generating a sequentially
numbering field, but I've now realized that I need the sequenced control
(which is an inventory number [Skeletal ID] in a subform) to be prefaced with
the identifying number [Catalog No] that autofills from the main form.
Otherwise, the sequence blends my entries from separate catalog numbers. For
example, Skeletal ID 1,2,3,4 are all in sequence in the form for Catlog No
435779, but then Skeletal ID 6,7,8 will be under Catalog No 435778 if I
entered them in that order (which happens often). This ends up creating gaps
in the sequence for the inventory for each Catalog No which is no better than
what auotnumbers were doing.

Ideally, I'd like to have it generate a number that shows the catalog
number, then a dash and the inventory number, like: 435779-7, 435779-8,
435779-9, with the inventory number (Skeletal ID] increasing incrementally
with each new record as log as I am within the same catalog number [Catalog
No]. Then starting voer at one when I switch Catalog No.

Any ideas for a neophyte?

Because I am coding for hundreds of very similar little bone fragments, so it
helps me to be able to know which "left first distal hand phalanx fragment" I
worked on last, and also to know at a glance how many items are in each
catalog number. does thast make any sense?

Perhaps this is a silly question, but why is it so important that the
sequence numbers not have any gaps?
