I have a publishing problem that is about to make a blood vessel in my
forehead pop and kill me, so hopefully someone here can save my life... The
details are:
1. Using FTP to publish. Can't use FPE
2. The problem has persisted from FP 2000 to now FP 2002
3. I have zero other problems with any other net access apps and FTP works
fine
4. I'm on DSL and have enabled passive mode FTP
5. The web is medium sized
6. Happens whether doing unconditional full publish or publishing changes,
and whether using web or file stamps as the criterial for incremental
publish.
7. Happens even if no other outgoing traffic from my network, so it can't be
interference of any sort.
Basically, I get one of two results. It will run for some number of files,
then it either either hang and then give me what is probably a bogus error
since they are all over the place (can't get cwd, directory doesn't exist,
etc...) or it will go into a freak out feedback loop where it's obviously
sending packets back and forth at a very rapid rate (pegs my DSL modem
activity lights) but not actually doing anything and then it times out after
about 30 seconds or so of that. If I restart it, it'll go forward again for
some number of files and then do the same thing. If I stop and start the app
before restarting it seems to do a little better the next time, but that may
not be true.
It happens consistently and has been doing so for the last year, and makes
use of FP a serious problem for me. Very occasionally it'll do almost a full
update, so it's got to be something sporadic, but mostly it'll get through
maybe a 25 to 50 files and then has one of the two problems indicated. It
almost always dies on a gif file, though not always. I've upgraded my
LinkSys DSL router to the latest firmware just incase, though I saw no
reports of anyone who seemed to suspect that as an issue.
So, I'm a little confused. Given that restarting it makes it keep going,
clearly any errors reported were bogus. But since I have zero problems with
any program but FP, and I FTP files all the time with other FTP apps and
they never fail, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with my ISP's FTP
server. But, since the problem existed in 2000 and now in 2002 I can't
imagine that such an obvious bug would exist in FP for that long.
I'm at a loss as to who to point the finger at, but it clearly seems to have
to be problem in FP of some sort, since it's the only app that has any
problems. I've searched the web and groups and though I see lots of
publishing problems reported, none of them seem to be similar to mine, or
none that I've found.
Any ideas?
