Yikes! Document messed up!

Clyde Soles

Something really screwy just happened.

I'm working on a book that an editor has both made changes (with tracking)
and added comments. The document is set up with 4 outline levels. Using Word
v.X release 1 on a G4 with OS 10.2.8.

All of a sudden, I can no longer view the document properly either in
outline view or the map view. The headings are still there when I click on a
line but outline view doesn't recognize them. Even weirder is the comments
that were entered are now out of position (off by about a line).

Previous saved versions still format correctly in word so the file itself
seems to be messed up. Of course, I've made significant changes since the
last backup so I'm really hoping there is a way to rescue this file!

Any suggestions?

Hi Clive:

There's your problem: Document Map view destroys Outlining in a document.

For a full explanation, read my earlier post today: but the bottom line is
that Document Map changes the Outline Level on paragraphs it thinks are
headings, using direct formatting. This is the way it is designed to work.

The cure is "Don't use Document Map view EVER on professional documents."

Instead, use Outline View. It's more powerful, and it does not alter your
document formatting. Leave the eye-candy for the new users: you use the
professional tools designed to do YOUR job :)

Hope this helps
