You cannot add or change a record because a related record is required in 'table_name'

You cannot add or change a record because a related record is required in
'table_name'

I get this error after selecting a related tables code from a combo box that
list the available values from the linked table. If I remove the referential
integrity constaint in the relationships window, I don't get this and the
code is saved in the record. What am I doing wrong?
