I found the reason and the terrible fix: You have "Tampered" with Office. Your tampering is to install Messenger 7.
You have to start from scratch: Remove the Office Folder in Applications. Restart. Reinstall from the DVD. Restart. Start Word. Update to 12.1.0 using Microsoft update. Restart. Start Word. Update to 12.1.1. - And I would not recommend to install Messenger 7 again.

Indeed, I do have Messenger 7 installed. I'll try your suggestions and
see what happens.

Now, why that should be interpreted to be a "non-standard"
installation is completely beyond me.

I think I feel an AOL moment coming on -- <AOL> Me Too! </AOL> -- there it
goes :)

Sadly, it's not completely beyond ME -- it's lazy damn coding :)

The Installer is looking for a list of the target files it is interested in:
some are shared libraries, others are the application executables.

If it finds any that are not the expected versions, it barfs and gives up at
that stage. What I believe it should do is simply prepare a list of "Update
Targets" and leave the newer versions off that list.

I think it's sloppy design/coding.

I am afraid coding standards seem to have slipped a bit since Bill G was in
charge :)

I get the same error message but the only Messengers I have are
Microsoft Messenger 6.0.3 (Office 2008) and 4.0.0 (Office 2004). I am
running 10.5.3 on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz.

As far as I can remember I haven't made any special changes to Office
(either 2008 or 2004). Anything else that could be considered
"tampering?"

Perhaps needless to say in this context, but I meant to add that I am
running Office 12.1.0.

Hi Charles:

The installer is totally anally-retentive :)

Any change at all will stuff it up.

I believe that Office MUST be on the boot partition, and there should be no
other bootable partitions mounted.

Cheers

I don't know if this will throw a monkey wrench (left or right handed)
into your theory or not.

I just go through last night installing 12.1.1 on the Office 2008 I have
loaded on my firewire hard drive, on my G4-500.

Counting it which naturally has X.4.11 installed the two internal
drives, one with OSX.3.9 and one with OS9 are systems bootable

I had not trouble installing on it and on my PowerBook 17" which I had
installed on first.

I even downloaded bwo: the PowerBook using FF3 from Mactopia site.

Then after I updated with out a hitch on the PB17" I copied the dmg file
to a 2 GB USB memory stick. Plugged into my G4500 after switching to
Firewire Driver copied to the Firewire Drive then opened.

The only thing I saw different the software polled all the drives to see
which had at least X.4.11 and office 2008 took about 3 minutes to do.
once it determined which drive I clicked Okay to go on and the install
was smooth as clockwork.

Thinking it over, I now remember that I have used Macaroni to remove
language-specific files, so this may have been the culprit.

After removing and reinstalling 2008 and updating to 12.1.0, 12.1.1
installed with no problem. Now I can open Word files again by
double-clicking them instead of having to resort to the tedious
File>Open.

If I continue to remove language-specific files, I wonder if future
Office updates will also require starting over again?

By the way, interestingly, I just used the 11.5.0 updater on my 2004
installation (Word 11.4.2) and didn't have any problem at all.

I can't recall any longer if double-clicking to open Word docs wasn't
working with that version also, but it is now.

Let's see if I can make the below more readable. I reread two times
before posting :-( items in bold have been changed or added.

I too have been receiving "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.1 Update on this volume". If I uninstall office 2008 on my mac, does that mean I will lose files, and settings I already have on my enterage? I am new to macs and it took me such a long time to figure it out and customize it. Do I have no other option but to reinstall the office 2008, and then try and add the 12.1.1 updates?

Hi Charles:

Yes, they will.

The installation mechanism may be fixed for Office 14, but don't count on
it.

In the meantime, it seems to be important not to fiddle with the files in
Office 2008 if you want a happy life :)

Cheers

Hi Charles:

Yes, Office 2004 uses a different Installer program. You can customise that
one.
