You cannot save a template file to non-template format

So,

When I fill out my apa-template file and then want to save the filled out
template as a document (all templates open as templates rather than
documents), how do I fix this little error in life? Is the fact it is
opening as a template the problem or is something else happening in the
background.

MacBook Pro
OSX 10.4.8
Office 2004 (full and complete install)

Are you sure about that? You can save a .dot template as a Word document in
the "Save as" dialogue by selecting "Word Document" (the very first option)
as the file format.

It works without any problems for me

I think it is just the way Word 2004 works. Once the template is saved
in your default templates location as a template to your satisfaction,
in order to use it to create a document based upon it, you have to
create the document via the project gallery (cmd-shift-P), specifying
your pride and joy as the template of choice.

On one hand that is annoyingly circuitous, on the other, you sure get
the warm feeling that you are not modifying your template every time
you create a document based on it.

Absolutely Antal,

That is the way it works with Word 2003 (PC), but with 2004 for some reason
on my box it doesn't.

Well I moved them all into the "My Templates" directory and it works just
fine from there. I (used) to keep my templates in folders with the work
products of them. I guess I'll just have to adapt my work flow. Thank you
very much for the help.

I am using a Mac as well, Off2004.
I have seen from the other answer, you are not alone with this problem, but
it really does work for me. Can you post the template?
Now I am curious :)

Eh, I think you won't be surprised, it doesn't work for me either... Sorry

But actually I have found a solution, however it doesn't work as it's
suppoesed. Yet. But if I somehow get it to work, I will get back to you ;)

That is the way Word 2004 is supposed to behave. When you open a template by
double-clicking it in the Finder, Word will open the template file, *not* a
document based on that template. A template file cannot be saved as a
document, it can only be saved as a template. You can only get a new
document based on a template by saving the template in
Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Templates/My Templates and then selecting
it in Word's project gallery.

This is the APA template I've been using for a couple years now. It's worked
in Word for several version on MAC and PC. If I open if (double click) from
the desktop I get a .dot (template) that won't save as a document (see above
error), if I open word and then the template through the project screen (my
templates) then it opens as a new document.
