you have exceeded the number of pages supported by Microsoft Word

I have a 27 page document - originally created in Word 2003. I opened and
revised it on another computer in Word 2007. I emailed it to myself and
opened it again in Word 2003. Although I see only 27 pages, the page count
at the bottom keeps increasing up to 9000 and even above. I tried deleting
the last few lines of the document in case there were hidden page breaks, but
that didn't work. I tried copy/pasting the 27 pages into a new document, and
got the same increasing page count problem. I tried to just ignore and work
with the document, but as I added text, I got this error message "You have
exceeded the number of pages supported by Microsoft Word." Seems like a
virus - but my virus protection hasn't set off an alarm. Does anyone know
how to fix this?
