"Your Office database is damaged."

OS 10.4.11
Office 2004
Entourage 11.4.0

Hi,

In Entourage I am getting the warning "Your Office database is damaged-Do
you want to quit MSN Messenger and all Miocrosoft Offioce Programs so that
the Database Utility can run?"

That messaage is shortly followed by "The action could not be completed. An
unknown error (4363) occurred."

I get these messages most frequently when I try to Delete items in the
Entourage Deleted Items folder The warning has been going on for a couple of
weeks. I don't use MSN Messenger. I guess my Entourage is pretty full with
@1000 emails saved. I don't know if this has anything to do with the
problem.

I've downloaded three articles about rebuilding the Database:
1. Rebuild Your Database
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/rebuild.html
2. Article ID 268323storage locations for entourage user data
3. How to rebuild your identity database in Entourage Q268322

At the start of the article "Rebuild Your Database" is stated:
"FAQ: ³If I rebuild my Entourage database will I lose all my categories and
links!²
[ANS] Not anymore with Entourage 2008!" I have Entourage 2004.

As for backing up, I have my entire hard drive duplicated on an external
hard drive using a program called CCC Carbon Copy Cloner.

My question is: What am I getting into here?
Is this going to be a long drawn out process?
Am I going to have to rebuild some things piece by piece?
Will the folders I have organized so carefully on the left side of the
Entourage window remain the same?

Thanks, Rafael

You have database corruption.
I get these messages most frequently when I try to Delete items in the
Entourage Deleted Items folder The warning has been going on for a couple of
weeks. I don't use MSN Messenger. I guess my Entourage is pretty full with
@1000 emails saved. I don't know if this has anything to do with the
problem.

Has nothing to do with how many messages, but it could have something to do
with the free space on your hd.

You asked about this the other day and I replied in your thread "Forgot name
of repair message" You never got back.
At the start of the article "Rebuild Your Database" is stated:
"FAQ: ³If I rebuild my Entourage database will I lose all my categories and
links!²
[ANS] Not anymore with Entourage 2008!" I have Entourage 2004.

You will loose categories then.
As for backing up, I have my entire hard drive duplicated on an external
hard drive using a program called CCC Carbon Copy Cloner.

My question is: What am I getting into here?

Rebuilding can be very complicated for some users. It depends on your level
of experience and your physical drive space.
Is this going to be a long drawn out process?

Depends on many factors. There is no one answer.
Am I going to have to rebuild some things piece by piece?

Depends on your corruption.
Will the folders I have organized so carefully on the left side of the
Entourage window remain the same?

These should not be touched.

Diane,

I apologize for not getting back to you.

The figures are:
55.77 GB HD
46.89 GB Space utilized
8.88 GB Space free

Not all of the computer is running slowly. But there are quirks such as in
iTunes with the arrow that when clicked turns into two bars and starts the
play. I press the arrow and instead of starting immediately, it takes about
30 seconds.

You are dangerously low on disk space. If you examine your page in/outs you
will probably see exactly how much your system is churning using virtual
memory. See this page on how to check page in/outs.

Problems from Insufficient RAM and Free Hard Disk Space

I do not believe you will be able to rebuild your database with this small
amount of space. You mentioned you had another drive. You might consider
archiving some of your data to the other drive to improve performance.

See this thread where there is an in-depth discussion on rebuilding your
database.

Entourage 11.4.0

Diane,

First I've started removing items from files and folders. A day or so ago, I
lost all settings. Safari is back to its old default with the apple home
page.

Most of the 700 pages in ScratchPad (a note program that's better than
Stickies) I had with written information are now blank.

All carefully built up Bookmarks are gone and I don't know if the right ones
that are in the back of Bookmarks are the ones I set up.

I'm afraid that all this happened just before I did my major daily back up
to CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner).

All my Folders and Files are OK, thank God.

I have a program called Baseline which scans any drive and amongst other
things shows all duplicates. I want to remove all duplicates to see if I can
get the size of the HD up to 10 GB or above.

All these things I'm doing are prior to fixing "Corrupt Data Base" I
probably made the wrong choice there, but I still don't know why all these
things disappeared.

I'm back in a period (probably long) where this maintence has to be done,
and that means down time from work and I'm extremely frustrated (but that's
my own problem)

Any more feedback?

Thanks,

Rafael

just have the same set up with Bookmarks gone, etc.

Also, 'Screenshots' and Preview 'Snapshots' are not working anywhere.

Any more feedback?

Should I do the 'Rebuild Data Damage' or continue backing up Folders and
Files now. I have means and external space to do this.

Thanks,

Rafael

It would be a guess at what you did that caused the problems. This is why
you do a backup BEFORE you start on a spring cleaning.

I would guess that many of these files are in the ~/Library/ folder.
I have a program called Baseline which scans any drive and amongst other
things shows all duplicates.

I am always very leery of anything that does a blanket removal. Personally,
I would buy a new drive, install the OS and Office then do my recovery. Add
your other files and applications slowly so that you only bring over once
copy to the new drive. Otherwise you can end up lost data and spend days
doing this.

Good luck.

Diane,
Just how many GB do I need to remove to do the rebuild data base. I
have 7 left and I have a problem of where to store those that I remove
from my HD. Thanks Rafael
