zdl files

My excel and word sheet have somehow been converted to .zdl file extensions.
Have no idea what a .zdl is, never seen this, and can't find any information
by searching this site, google or any where else

According to a quick Google search, the ZDL file extension is used by
Avery's DesignPro label design program. If you have this file installed,
then I'd guess it somehow changed your Excel files into its files. If you
change the extension for one of these files that you are sure used to be an
Excel file from ZDL back to XLS, can Excel still open it?

This is possible because I did visit the Avery website. I'm a little
apprehensive about all this changing because I desparately need to safe these
files.

Can you tell me how to change the extension correctly? I tried to right
click the file, rename, omit zdl, insert xls and rec'd the message "If you
change a file name extension the file may become unusable. Are you sure you
want to make this change"

I selected "Yes"

Next message, "Are you sure you want to make this file read only"

I stopped there and didn't go any further because I need to do more with
this file than read only. I will need to add information to it monthly.

Something I forgot to include in the original post. While trying to figure
this out on my own, I remember I had a back up disc from months back. I
loaded the disc and when I opened it, all the saved files had the .zdl file
extensions. I know it wasn't like that when I saved them to this disc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for you interest.

I'm not sure what to tell you (especially about the back up files having
their extensions changed... that is a new one for me)... are you sure you
haven't picked up a virus (maybe doing a thorough virus scan would be in
order first)? As for changing the extension... make a copy of the file and
perform the extension change on the copy. If you still end up with a Read
Only file, right-click the file, select Properties and (on the General tab
on my system) uncheck the Read Only check box in the Attributes section.
After that, see if Excel can open the file. You also might consider
contacting Avery and explain to them what is happening to see if they have
ever heard of this problem before and, if they have, do they have a quick
fix you can apply to straighten things out.
