zoom in on photos

I want to slowly zoom in on some photos so the effect make it look like the
photo is not moving, only the "camera"? I can create this effect properly
only if I can size the photo so it is as big or bigger than the slide and
then using the zoom effect (grow larger) in Custom Animation. How can I get
this to work right with say 2 photos on the slide so one is zoomed in on and
then the same effect is created with the second one? I have PowerPoint 2003.
It appears that Microsoft's free Photo Story 3 does a better job of zooming
in and out and panning! I also posted a the same question about panning
without the photo appearing to move.

You might want to experiment with this technique

Set your background as the picture(s)FORMAT>BACKGROUND>FILL EFFECTS>PICTURE

Place a shape on the slide and in format - autoshape set the fill to
background.

Use the emphasis animation on the shape.

Having thought about this - could you insert a mask (made from grouped
rectangles maybe)around the photos If it was in front it would mask the
photo seeming to move. Not elegant certainly!

I'm not sure what you mean about a "mask." I tried putting a rectangle around
a single photo, order it to the back but still showing on all sides of the
photo, and then grow it and the photo at the same time. This is okay. With
more than one photo, the first grows into the second, which I really don't
want to happen, otherwise it is too small.

This technique is pretty good. Any suggestions on panning from left to right
or right to left?

Sorry I missed this at the time.

The mask has to be in front which means make it from four rectangles around
the photo and group them to make a rectangle with a hole. Hope thats clear

Thanks much. I think I did as you intended and it worked. Here's what I did:
I put the photo on the display. Then I created 4 larger rectangles to
completely surround the photo. I right-clicked the photo, clicked Custom
Animation, Emphasis, Grow, Slow (speed), 125 or 150 percent to get the zoom
in effect.

I still need to work on a panning effect. Maybe I can use your 4 rectangles
idea to get it to work.

I should also mention that after creating the rectangles, I deleted the
"lines" (sides of the rectangles) to make it look like one background.

I created the panning effect by creating the 4 rectangles surrounding the
photo as before (without borders). I then had to insert another rectangle to
take up the blank space where the photo goes. I made sure the photo appears
on top of this central rectangle. Then in Custom Animation for the photo, I
used the motion section. I made a small arrow which points in the opposite
direction from where the pan ends up. Make sure the panning does not take you
outside the surrounding rectangles, which mean you must make these rectangles
large enough to accommodate the pan. I am writing this to help anyone who
wants to create a panning effect.
