Can't open files on PC

W

WordSoAnnoying

Word files I've created and saved on my Mac in the last couple weeks won't seem to open on a PC. I've saved them as both .doc and .docx and neither will open. However, older files (.doc + .docx) will open.

WTF?!

I've heard that MacOS Word files aren't compatible with PC Word files
for some time. Usually you have to save them as the old Word 97-2004
format, which is what you found.

Guess you never got that memo.

Actually, you got the wrong memo.

I exchange .doc and .docx files with PC users all the time. Yes,
things can go wrong in that process, but your blanket statement
is not true.

To the OP: try changing in your email program the encoding you
use to send the files. There was a just a thread about that in
one of the Mac newsgroups recently.

Actually, whenever I had to send files from my Mac to someone using a
PC, they *always* had problems reading the .docx file but never the .doc
file. I set Apple's Mail to do "windows-friendly attachments" but still
it didn't work. Zip-ing a .docx file didn't work either. Other Mac
users who were sending articles into our journal also had this problem
until they switched to sending .doc files. So, whatever memo you're
reading Patty doesn't seem to have circulated in my Universe. Not too
surprising.

Then Google Docs came out and I stopped trying to send Word documents
altogether. The documents uploaded there could be shared without issue
between my editor and me.
