In the 2004 version of word for Mac there was a useful feature that let you know what line your were on in the document at any given time. It was sited at the bottom of the doc near the word count. It has now disappeared form the 2008 version - can any body tell me how to get it back or have Microsoft removed it permanently

Hello -

Most of us *do* miss the information previously supplied by the Status Bar
:-( Although there's no provision for restoring it in 2008 it isn't
necessarily gone forever.

Use Help> Send Feedback to add your request for bringing it back. I have no
idea whether it can be supplied by way of a future update, but if demand is
strong enough it may well be designed into the next version.
