MS Word hangs with "requesting virus scan" on Vista

This program is being used by my wife, alongside with the
other Office stuff for years on older Win versions, incl.
Win XP.

Now on the new laptop which we got, we have this (multiple
choice) fabled|infamous Windows Vista and I am helpless
like a baby, my wife is lost completely.

One issue is that MS Word would not open some of the *.doc
files. The program hangs, indicated as "non responding"
in task manager, and in the bottom status bar I see a
message "Requesting Virus Scan."

Is this is a known issue?
