Persistent "Formula refers to empty cells" error despite cells evidently NOT being em

This error is driving me slightly nuts. Spreadsheet is working fine
but error flags keep popping up and I'm worried it won't be fine fo
long.

Problem is: Persistent "Formula refers to empty cells" error despit
cells evidently NOT being empty.

Also, when error is traced. Excel traces back to a cell that is:
a) not referred to in the formula AT ALL
b) NOT empty

I have this error running down two columns containing VLOOKUPS. Sheet i
working fine. Error alerts are just silly and irritating.

Is it ok to ignore these? Or should I worry

Sounds like you are talking about Excel's so-called "background error
checking" feature.

First, these are not bona fide errors per se. Instead, they are features of
your formulas that Excel deems suspicious based on circumstances.

Whether or not your formulas are doing anything wrong is a matter of design.
Only you can determine that by inspection.

And whether or not you want these warnings (not errors!) is a matter of
personal choice.

I prefer to disable them. It sounds like you might, too.

You do not mention what version of Excel you are using. In Excel 2010,
click on File, then Formulas, deselect "Enable background error checking"
(remove the checkmark), and click on Reset Ignored Errors to remove all of
those nusance triangles.

Never give it another thought. If your formulas are incorrect, hopefully
you will know because of some unexpected behavior. Geesh, isn't that enough
"error checking"? (Rhetorical.)

I'm getting this too, very bizarre! As well as having the problem with Vlookup, i've got the error on a sum calculation too but I can see there is a solid list of numbers :S I'm using excel 08 for mac
