Spell Check Oddity

I

Idlewild03

Hi,
I have upgraded to Mac 2008 and it works grt. The only issue I have is regarding the spell check.

Basically when I am running spellcheck, sometimes I need to click on "ignore" and sometimes on "ignore all". In Word 2004, "ignore" use to work all the time but here I have to alternate between the two.

Also at times when I click on "change", nothing happens and then I have to manually select the suggested word and click change again.

Is it an issue? All I know is because of this I have to spend more time on spell check since I have to edit a whole truckload of documents everyday.

I'm not seeing this here--I just click on Change and Change All a whole
bunch of times in a long document.

In all documents?

Hi There,
The Change and Change All feature is fine I think. I cant use that cos I write long documents which contain non-english names, words etc at times and Word's suggestions border on the hysterical :) All at times Change doesnt work and I have to click on it like 5 times!

My basic grouse is that I have to alternate between "ignore" and "ignore all". I have Word 2008 student edition but my boyfriend has the retail version and he has the same problem. However he coudnt be bothered as the longest he has written is 5 lines :)

Its quite irritating and I hate writing on Pages as it feels so alien!

I'm not sure I'm understanding your problem.

Do you have to click on Ignore vs. Ignore All because the dialog doesn't
respond to your mouse click?

What is the sign that tells you clicking on Ignore didn't work?

(I also just clicked Ignore a bunch of times with no problem)

Hi Daiya,
Thanks for taking out time and being so patient :) Appreciate it.

See my problem is that if I click on ignore the first time and then move on to the second sentence "ignore" doesnt work. Then I have to click on "Ignore all". Then the third time "ignore all" doesnt work and then I click on ignore. So basically I have to alternate between the two as I never know what will work when.

By not working I mean the tab becomes unresponsive.

Now when I need to change a word and MS Word gives a recommendation (even whn there is only one suggestion), clicking on just "Change" doesnt work.

I have to manually go to the second box, highlight the word and then click on change! This also happens when there is only one word in the option box.

I am pretty sure that it use to never happen on MS 2004!

Whether 2004 0r 2008.

if you have several instances of a word you use say for instance is an
Acronym or a word used in specific science or math setting but will not
be, you know, in document; say for example if I use VPEA, I know is
short version of an association I belong to so it spelled correct.

I can either enter it in custom Dictions by clicking on add. Or I can
choose ignore or ignore all. If there is just one instance of this
*word* then choose ignore. (which mean ignore this instance).; or Ignore
All (which means ignore all instances of this word in the entire document).

So ignore and ignore all are two different animals. They serve two
different methods of doing the similar tasks.

So if you use ignore on a word or item and come to the next instance you
will either have to use ignore another time, or choose ignore all.

Now if your having a problem with ignore or ignore all becoming
*disabled* that's a different situation.

Hi let me explain with an example:

say this is the sentence:

"Karim Rashid is the brain behind the Sphera Bed and is it wrong to lust after a bed?"

Word picks out Rashid and Sphera and they have been used only once.

So now for Rashid I click "ignore" and it works. Then the next word is "Sphera" and once again I click "ignore". However the tab is unresponsive and it doesnt work no matter how many times I click.

Then I have no choice but to go to "ignore all" and then it works. After that I have to use "ignore" since "ignore all" wont work next time! Basically I have to alternate between the two!

Then say I want to replace a word and the program has given me 3 options and the 1st one is the correct one. even tho the first word will be highlighted in blue on clicking "change", nothing happens!

I have to either keep tapping or select it again manually from the list and the click "change" to make it work.

Does this make sense :) ?

Maybe you can copy paste the sentence I suggested and see how it plays out on ur Word?

D

Daiya Mitchell

Hey, Word knows how to spell Rashid.

Okay, this description helps a lot. It sounds like something is corrupt
somewhere, because I am not seeing similar problems. I checked your
sentence and other documents, and I can click on Ignore fine in all cases.

First--does this happen in all documents?

If it is all documents, then please try the three things below and let
me know whether any of the cases makes the problem disappear. (Uh, if
#1 makes it disappear, no need to try #2 or #3, etc)

Diagnostic tricks to help locate the cause of the problem:

1) hold down shift while launching Word. Does the problem persist?

2) Log out of your user account, then hold down shift while logging back
in. Does the problem persist?

3) create a new user account in OS X and test in that one. Does the
problem persist?

That's different than my example. What your saying is that its becoming
disabled. I don't know whether send a description of your problem on
the Help Menu > Feedback page would help or not. might be worth a shot.

If you haven't had application too long maybe a call to tech support
would alert them to a possible bug. (Although I haven't experienced this
problem with either Word 2004 or Word2008.

Hi there,
thanks for the tips Daiya! The first two didnt work however when I created a new user account and tested Word, it was fine! Didnt face any problem.

What should I do now? Shall I keep using word in the new account?

I had reinstalled the software once but it didnt help much.

John McGhie

Re-install almost never helps on the Mac. The files that get damaged are
not on the CD, so they do not get replaced when you re-install.

However, if you first run the Remove Office tool, and then delete all
instances of Normal Template, Word will create new copies of the damaged
files when it restarts.

Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer, and
drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has no
extension.

Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop.

Now try again. If that doesn't fix it, come back and we'll do a "Scorched
Earth" removal.

Cheers

Okay, since it works in a new user then some user specific file is
corrupt. Let's try the known suspects first--test to see if the problem
persists after each step, as you can stop once it's gone.

1. Quit Word. Drag the Normal template to the desktop. Relaunch Word.
Does the problem persist?
(The Normal template should be at [username]/Library/Application
Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/Normal.dotm, unless you moved it)

2. Quit all Office programs. Drag this entire folder to the desktop, and
then test again.
[username]/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/

3. Test the files as directed here:

Thanks guys for being patient! Did all the steps but it still doesnt work! I dont know what to do now its so irritating!

Scorched Earth" removal sounds so drastic and dramatic but extremely tempting! :)

Scorched Earth will take at least an entire billable day out of your life
:) I am not sure you would want to spend that much time on this issue :)

Have you been to Word>Preferences>Spelling and Grammar and clicked "Check
Document"? That's the old "RE-check Document" command. It resets the
internal ignore lists. It might just clear the problem.

Otherwise, you want to flip me a document, and I will have a look? I need
to get a better handle on what is really happening before we go much
further.

In your email, don't forget to repeat a generous description of the specific
problem. My memory is not what it used to was (advanced old-timer's
disease) so when someone sent me a one-line email the other day with a file,
all I could do was fire straight back with "Sorry? What were we talking
about??"

Hope this helps

it's five year later, and the same problem exists in Word for Mac 2011. However, I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION.

The first time, press Command key (left hand) and click on Ignore All. The next time, press option/Alt key and click on Ignore All. You can keep clicking on Ignore All but you have to alternate with your left on between Command and Option keys. A little clunky, but at least it allows you to use Ignore All as often as you want.
