Strange behavior of Word 2004

R

Russ Bankson

I installed Office 2004 on both my macbook running Tiger and on my G4
running Panther. Everything worked as expected. I subsequently installed
Tiger on my G4.

Now Word freezes and the menus no longer look as they do on my macbook.

In particular I've noticed:

1. the File menu no longer has a New Blank Document item. I can get a new
document by using Command N (there are many other differences on this and
other menus).
2. A. I select All on a Safari webpage (which includes images), copy and
then paste into a Word 2004 document, it pastes a small portion and then the
program freezes. I can drag an image by itself from the Safari page with no
problem or select a portion of text and copy and paste
B. I tried the same procedure from another Word doc and there doesn't
appear to be a problem doing this.
C. I tried the same process as A. with Firefox and it works

Ouch... You heathen!!!

Now be a good chap and run the Remove Office tool from the Microsoft Office
"Additional Tools" folder...

Then do a complete re-install of Office. And Service Pack 11.3 and Update
11.3.2.

Then go to the church of your choice and offer penitence for being so
barbarous as to jerk the operating system out from under an unsuspecting
application!!

Modern applications are a little too complex for that sort of death-defying
stunt. They have operating system version-specific components that need to
be updated in an orderly manner.

If you had run the 11.3 patch before you upgraded the OS, you "might" have
gotten away with it. 11.3 contained some fixes to make Office 2004
Tiger-compatible.

But now that it has gone bad, it's best to Remove Office it, and start
again. Warning: Run the tool, don't try to simply delete the application
folder, or you will become a permanent resident of pain city :)

Cheers
