2008 file Font mishandling on PC w old Word.

Adobe and Apple, as well as dell and others, have huge files on auto-update.

So did Microsoft, until this one.

I did the tests, sending 2008 .docx files to our PC users.

The same line spacing problems still remain.

I then saved them from 2008 as 2004 .doc files. Those worked fine.

So nothing has been solved as far as this thread's file mishandling problem.

And the PC users have the correct file translators.

And I haven't heard from Curt lately.

I used to do all my text writing in Quark XPress. Desktop Pub aps have complete word processors.

That worked just fine. But I changed because our PC users have Word.

Now I could just as well be doing my writing in Quark or InDesign and then savd the files as Word docs.

Disappointing.

I went back to Mactopia and looked. the time to download the update is
with 56K modem 9 hours Plus.

Phillip said:
Well at 144 mb or more I would think it would be impractical.

auto update is only practical for no more than 20mb unless you have a T1
or T5 connection. I have DSL (slow That it is) and the download from
Mactopia took 1/2 hr to download. with Cable I might have gotten it 15
maybe 10.

But many in the world even in the US are still dealing with good pots
network using s 56K modem. If it took me 1/2 hour with a 756K DSL
connection how long do you think a 56K connection would take (about
12hrs maybe?).

I have my doubts it will ever be on auto update.

Hi Phillip:

Well, it's on AutoUpdate "Now" :)

AutoUpdate will cheerfully handle a file of any size you want to accept.
However, we're still on the "learning curve" on the Mac.

Step 1 was to get an AutoUpdate mechanism that would work at all. We have
that now.

Step 2 is to develop it to download things in the background, so it does not
interfere with the user's work. We partially have that.

Step 3 is to enable it to look on your system and see exactly what you need,
and send you only that much. That is "partly" available for PC Office, and
"Perfectly" available for Corel applications.

In Microsoft Office PC, it will look on your system, then download only as
much as you need from the server. This cuts the download down to about a
tenth of the full file updates we're getting on the Mac currently.

With the Corel AutoUpdater, they send you a genuine "Patching Application"
that actually edits the files on your system, removing and updating only the
changed lines of code!

Baby steps, Phillip, baby steps... :)

Hi Mark:

Line spacing?? I wasn't aware we had a line spacing problem.

Kerning, yes. Line spacing? Not that I know of.

Do describe...

Cheers
