Can't update Office 2008 to 12.2.0

Here is how I resolved the problem without having to reinstall 10.6 (Snow
Leopard). Seems to work for two of the affected systems.

Assuming that the problem probably has something to do with permissions
related to Microsoft office 2008 installed Fonts, Automator scripts,
packages, etc., these need to be removed from the system. Deleting just the
Microsoft Office 2008 app folder, and /Library/Preferences/ Microsoft/
Office 2008 didn't do it for me.

Here is what I did, it took me about 10 minutes to perform this:

1. Delete the recommended Microsoft Office 2008 folders, plus Microsoft
installed Fonts, Automator scrips (if present), and packages, etc. (I should
write a little script to do this)

2. Reboot the OS.

3. Empty the trash

4. Reinstall from the store bought disk, then you should be able to upgrade
to 12.2.0, 12.2.1 without further issue.

I've gotten the ok from my company to post the detailed instruction that we
used internally, on our web site for folks to refer. This gives more detail
as to what files we deleted, and where to find them. I realize it may be a
bit more technical then folks desire. I also realize that it may not work for
everyone. Any feedback is appreciated. Perhaps Microsoft will adopt it and
tune-it up a bit.

We just needed to get this work because 12.2.1 is way faster than 12.1.0 for
us.

The following is how I resolved this update failure, without having to
reinstall 10.6 OS. I was able to fix this on two affected computers. It tkaes
about five minutes to perform.

Assuming these types of issues are possibly related to file permissions, the
trick is to delete all Microsoft office 2008 fonts, Automator scripts,
Install packages, and the other normally recommended Microsoft Office 2008
folders and files.

In summary, the is the process is:

1. Make sure you've backed up your drive using timeMachine or similar.

2. Run the Disk Utility - Repair permissions, just as a precaution to insure
success.

3. Trash the recommended Microsoft Office 2008 folders and files such as:
The Office 2008 folder in the user apps folder, /Library/Perferences/Microsoft

4. Also trash the other Microsoft installed files such as Automator scripts
(if any), Microsoft Font folder, caches, receipts, etc, installed by
Microsoft. Some may be hard to find. See link for details.

5. Reboot OS, then empty the trash.

6. Reinstall Office 2008 from store bought disk, upgrade to 12.2.0, the
12.2.1 as usual.

I posted our internal instruction on our web site so you can see the details
of exactly what I had done, for your reference. Some of the file removal my
be over the top, but it worked without affecting anything else. I'm sure
Microsoft will fix the issue soon, so writing an Apple Script probably isn't
worth the effort.

I hope this helps some folks.

Dear Lonnie,

it worked! Thanks a lot for this instructions and detailed step by step
approach.
It is a shame, that MS is not able to support its customers but a third
party IT expert can!

Thanks again for your efforts!

Hi Paul;

You're certainly welcome to question, challenge, contradict, etc. any advice
from anyone, but immature name calling & denigration of contributors is not
what these newsgroups are about.
