Here is how I resolved the problem without having to reinstall 10.6 (Snow
Leopard). Seems to work for two of the affected systems.
Assuming that the problem probably has something to do with permissions
related to Microsoft office 2008 installed Fonts, Automator scripts,
packages, etc., these need to be removed from the system. Deleting just the
Microsoft Office 2008 app folder, and /Library/Preferences/ Microsoft/
Office 2008 didn't do it for me.
Here is what I did, it took me about 10 minutes to perform this:
1. Delete the recommended Microsoft Office 2008 folders, plus Microsoft
installed Fonts, Automator scrips (if present), and packages, etc. (I should
write a little script to do this)
2. Reboot the OS.
3. Empty the trash
4. Reinstall from the store bought disk, then you should be able to upgrade
to 12.2.0, 12.2.1 without further issue.
I've gotten the ok from my company to post the detailed instruction that we
used internally, on our web site for folks to refer. This gives more detail
as to what files we deleted, and where to find them. I realize it may be a
bit more technical then folks desire. I also realize that it may not work for
everyone. Any feedback is appreciated. Perhaps Microsoft will adopt it and
tune-it up a bit.

We just needed to get this work because 12.2.1 is way faster than 12.1.0 for
us.
