Cube failed to build

Hi John

Vnotify service is very much memory consuming and there is known memory
leakage issue, so from time to time you need to restart it to clear any
leakage.
the XML files processing time depends on you server configuration and how
many applications are running.
for a single server installation XML files processing time is longer than
normal .

the question I have here now for you, are you using any OLAP extensions?
if yes, then remove all the extensions and use only the default fieldds and
build the cube again .
if not, what is the effective security permissions on the cube?

Hi Amir,

I have restarted the View notify service successfully, and found it in the
Task manager. The xml files are going through as slowly as they were
yesterday, when I fed them through just a few at a time. I tried to do the
trick with moving all the xml files into a temp folder, and then moving them
back one by one. And they all go. I started off one by one, and then started
doing it 10 by 10, and finally 25 by 25. It just takes a really really long
time, and that doesn't seem right to me.

All of your help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

I still suspecting the views notification service eventhough the status is
"Started"
to cut it short, Restart the service again ( Start \ Admin tools \ Services )
and create a new empty folder, Move all XML files from the view drop folder
to the new folder, move back the secnond oldest XML file to view drop folder
and chack if it will be processed or not.
if the file is processed successfully, you will notice some activities in the
Vnotify.exe in task manager and the file disappear from view drop folder,

then you can continue with the rest of XML files

Note: the oldest XML file maybe is corrupted, this why it is blocking all
files behind.

Good Luck

Hi Gary,

We're running SQL 8.00 with SP4. I'm pretty sure we haven't changed the
configuration recently, but we have had a couple of projects published
recently. One of these projects had illegal characters in the task names,
which I have removed and then saved the project. There was also a project
with an illegal character in the project name, which I rectified with the
project renamer tool and then published the project plan using the View
Populator tool. Hope this is helpful to some degree?

Cheers,

John

:

What version of SQL are you using and at what SP? We don't expect to see
errors like this in a normally operating system, so it may be some data in
the system that's causing the problems unless your configuration recently
changed.

Hi Gary,

We have a single dedicated server setup, using MS Project Server 2003 at
SP2a. PMs have MS Project 2003 with SP2. We upgraded to SP2a roughly six
months ago, and our system has run as smooth as a baby's derier since
then.
Is this enough, or would you like more info?

I have recently tried removing all .xml files from the viewdrop folder and
inserting them a few at a time. This seems to be working, and I am now
down
to c. 200 files left to process. I had a load of warning messages turn up
in
the log coinciding with me removing the files. The message is copied
below,
but I think its just telling me that the files disappeared, so the xml
couldn't be loaded? Presumably the 0x80004005 refers to Viewdrop
permissions?
Although "everybody" has permission to the Viewdrop folder.

Anyway, hope this is useful information. Once I've got all of the xml
files
processed, the next step I was going to try was to delete and recreate the
COM+ objects. Would this make a difference to how fast the xml files are
being loaded? I have certainly used the View Populator tool in the past to
publish all project plans, and I don't recall the xml being processed this
slowly before.

Cheers,

John

Can you describe your system? What's the basic setup? What SP levels are

Sorry Gary,

I've been playing, trying to work out what's going on here, and I've
noticed
soemthing else weird. I used the View Populator tool to publish all of
the
project plans, and the tool said that they were all successfully

:

John:

When you build the cube manually, the system uses your logon
credentials
to
run the job. When you run it as a scheduled job, the system uses the
OLAPAdmin credentials you provided at setup to run the job. If there
were
something wrong with the OLAPAdmin account, such as the account being
disabled or the password expired, we'd see things working with a
manual
build and not with the scheduled build. Look in the server application
event
log for errors.

Marc,

OK, so this morning it failed to update properly again. Again the
message
stated the cube had built successfully, again no messages in the
event
log,
but again, PA did not display any data. So, now I have run the
TRUNCATE
SQL
query, deleted the Cube, rebuilt the cube, and have scheduled it to
build
in
the next half hour. I'll let you know what happens on that one, but
do
you
know why the data would appear when a "manual update" is done, but
when
scheduled, it disappears?

Cheers,

John

:

John,

At the very end make sure you give permission to 'everyone' in
Analysis
Manager to all cubes. If you don't do that you won't be able to
access
the
Cube from PWA.

Hi Amir,

Thanks again - your help and patience is really appreciated.

We used to operate with Bogdanov's PA Extender, but that is not currently
installed, so there are no extensions as far as I'm aware.

Please pardon my ignorance if this is not what you are asking, but in
Analysis Manager, drilling down to the Cube and selecting Manage Roles, I
have given "Everyone" permission.

I did restart the server, seemingly without any problems. However, I have
copied all the event log errors below which appeared during the start-up.
Sorry if its a touch OTT.

Hi Amir,

I do have one thing to add. After restarting the server, I placed c. 70 xml
files in the Viewdrop folder, and it took c. 20 mins to process them all.
Does that sound "normal" to you? I am trying to remember whether I have ever
looked at the Viewdrop folder with quite so many files going through it, and
I think the answer is no, so I have no benchmark, and maybe 20 mins for 70
files is to be expected.

Hi John am really enjoying working with you on this error; it is a good
learning challenge.
Processing 70 XML files in 20 min is very much typical for single server
installation and as I mentioned before it depends on the server configuration
(Processor frequency and RAM size)
From the errors appeared in the event log I have some suggestions
1- Update MDAC to the latest version 2.8
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en
2- Using Editsite utility, Create a new Project server site, map it to the
same database , from the new site generate OLAP cube, and check for errors
Edit site utility could be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3e-54e1-40a9-9bb8-2dd293226b6f&DisplayLang=en

3- I understand that you have applied SP2a 6 month ago, the question here
have you applied any post SP2a hotfixes? If any, are they applied correctly?

4- One more thing I need to confirm, You are not using SQL 2005 , Correct ?

Cheers,

John

Sorry Gary,

I've been playing, trying to work out what's going on here, and I've

soemthing else weird. I used the View Populator tool to publish all of
the

When you build the cube manually, the system uses your logon

run the job.

So, now I have run the
TRUNCATE
SQL
query, deleted the Cube, rebuilt the cube, and have scheduled it to
build

Hi Amir,

That's good to know - I sometimes feel like I do nothing but take from this
group, but I hope that once I have a better grasp I will begin to be able to
help others too.

I had a break-through last night, in that the Cube did build. The day before
I had deleted the COM+ objects, and the password had been changed, so the
cube did not built at all. Yesterday the IS unit changed the password of the
associated role, and I managed to recreate the COM+ objects, and my instinct
is that the success is due to the COM+ Objects being recreated.

However, we needed to restart the server again this morning, and some of the
error messages I posted to you yesterday appeared again. I have copied them
below. So, in response to your questions:

1. The server and all clients are already operating on MDAC 2.8
2. I will try this and see whether I get errors.
3. No additional fixes have been applied either to the server or clients
since SP2a (and SP2 for the clients) were applied.
4. We are using SQL 2000 8.00.2039 on the Project Server.

Very best wishes,

John

Cheers,

John

:

Good Luck
