Hi Eric:
Yes, that's "major" progress OK, your "Spelling Engine" is working
perfectly and the required language is installed. That's great.
The only remaining problem is that your custom dictionary is corrupted.
You said you had only 30 words in it? If so, it's quickest to simply blow
it away and make another one.
To do that, Quit Word, then find the custom dictionary and delete it. Empty
the trash.
Then re-start Word, and immediately create a new custom dictionary as
described in the Help topic " Create and use a custom dictionary".
If you had "hundreds" of words in your custom dictionary, I would talk you
through repairing it, but it's an exacting and laborious process: quicker to
just blow it away.
Cheers

Hello John -
Thanks for your encouragement and advice.
I selected all the text in the manuscript I'm currently working on, then went
to Tools > Language > Set Language, and chose English (US).
Doing so removed the red underlines of all common words. Progress!
Could not add any technical terms to the Custom Dictionary however. In Word >
Prefs > Spelling and Grammar, Custom Dictionary is checked, and its language
is set to none.
I'll be grateful for your continuing help.
Cheers,
Eric
