Custom dictionary is not available

Hi Eric:

Yes, that's "major" progress :) OK, your "Spelling Engine" is working
perfectly and the required language is installed. That's great.

The only remaining problem is that your custom dictionary is corrupted.

You said you had only 30 words in it? If so, it's quickest to simply blow
it away and make another one.

To do that, Quit Word, then find the custom dictionary and delete it. Empty
the trash.

Then re-start Word, and immediately create a new custom dictionary as
described in the Help topic " Create and use a custom dictionary".

If you had "hundreds" of words in your custom dictionary, I would talk you
through repairing it, but it's an exacting and laborious process: quicker to
just blow it away.

Cheers

Hello John -

Thanks for your encouragement and advice.

I selected all the text in the manuscript I'm currently working on, then went
to Tools > Language > Set Language, and chose English (US).

Doing so removed the red underlines of all common words. Progress!

Could not add any technical terms to the Custom Dictionary however. In Word >
Prefs > Spelling and Grammar, Custom Dictionary is checked, and its language
is set to none.

I'll be grateful for your continuing help.

Cheers,

Eric

Your main dictionary has not gone anywhere -- you would get an error message
if it had.

However, I suspect that the language marked on your text is not a language
that your main dictionary contains, so it cannot operate.

You either have text marked with a language you do not have, or you have it
marked "Do not check spelling or grammar" (which is actually treated as the
language "no proofing").

Follow both procedures in the Help Topic " Change the language of the
spelling dictionary" to fix this.

Cheers

For some reason my main dictionary has disappeared, every time I use spell
check despite words being horribly misspelt it says all is good. I want my
main dictionary back, I am using word 2004 and 10.4.11 of Mac OS, I am going
crazy!!!

Hi John -

I followed your suggestion to trash the old and add a new Custom Dictionary. It is now allowing me to add in technical terms, to my great relief. I can now start rebuilding the dike.

I'm grateful to you for your sage advice and patience.

Many thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric:

That's great. I am pleased to hear that it's working now.

This can be a real pain. If you need to rescue a Custom Dictionary, you
can, and I can talk you through it. Let's hope you will never need to do it
:)

Cheers
