Display problem

Don

I have a problem with displaying a button on my webpage. I'm using
FP2000. My home page (index.html) won't display a new button I've added to
it. Here's what I have and what I've done.
I've created my home page using Photodraw 2000. I have a logo on the page
and several buttons to navigate thru the website. The way I've done this is
to create the buttons in Photodraw as well as the logo and the background of
the page. I then save it as a jpg. I go to FP and "insert a picture from
a file" and choose the page I made. I then create "hotspots" for all the
buttons. All of this works very well.
My problem is with a new button I've added yesterday to this page. It
won't display on the website. While I'm in FP the button is visible. When
I select the preview tab in FP the button displays and works as it should.
I've checked it with the "Preview in Browser" option in FP and that works as
it should also. The next step then is to select the "Publish Web" option.
I do this and everything uploads to my website. Here's the problem. When I
view the actual website the new button is not displayed. However, if you
move your mouse to where it should be the mouse turns into a pointing
finger, indicating that something is there. When you click on that area it
takes you to the page it's supposed to.
The button is not visible. I've created this button with the same
process I created the others. As a matter of fact I have a Photodraw file
that has all the buttons in it for my website.
In case I haven't explained it very well here's the URL for the site.
You can look at it yourself and tell me what you think. Move your mouse
above the "email" button and it should react as I've described above.
Thanks for your help,
Don...........

If you mean the guestbook button, it shows in my browser.

Try clearing your temporary internet and history files.

The Guestbook button is visible from here.

Why is the page divided into quadrants with all your content in the upper
left...looks weird.

Some of your images are incredibly large...like 500k to 1.2meg...way too
big, you need to optimize them - they're on the Scenic page.

Would the button be for the link to Guest Book? That is visible and
the link works.

At a guess, you can't see the latest version because you are viewing a
cached version of the page. You need to refresh the page in your
browser. View the page then press the F5 key.

However, the entire page is a single 780 x 440px image (called
LogoA.jpg) with areas defined as links. The layout of the logo and the
buttons is curious, to say the least, but I assume you had your
reasons for designing it that way.

I would have expected the page's green background to be defined in the
<body> tag or a stylesheet as a colour ("#006600"). You don't need a
green image for the background. This would avoid the white edge you
see when viewing the page on a large area screen.

Then I'd expect the logo itself to be a single image and, most
importantly, for the buttons to be eight individual image files
arranged beside or below the logo, leaving space for some descriptive
text on the page.

By laying out the logo and buttons and then saving the layout as a JPG
you are not able to take advantage of the flexibility of HTML. Use
tables to make sure that the buttons go where you want them to go, and
stay there.

A funny thing about the guest book button. It didn't show on my
computer this morning when I posted this message but when I got to work I
saw it on my computer. Someone suggested clearing the temporary internet
files and cookies, also using the F5 key. Now the button shows.
I'm not sure why it's divided. Actually I didn't know it was. How can
I view the same thing you are. You're the first person to tell me that. I
know of several dozen people who have seen the website and no one has told
me that..
However you're the second person to tell me about the size of the
pictures on the Scenic page. How do I optimize them? I'm going to do that
page over again (trying my own solution for the size). Please reply if you
will as to whether I've done it correctly.
Thanks for your reply and time,

D

Don

Thanks for your reply. I hope you will bear with me as I try to understand
what you're telling me. I will answer your questions in order. I'm sure I
have other questions as well if you don't mind.

Where have I gone wrong in designing it and what are the limitations because
of it? What would you suggest I do?

Yes the button is visible but it wasn't earlier today. Because of your
suggestions it is now displayed.
As for why I designed the page this way it just happened like that. I
designed the page in Photodraw and it came out this way. I know it's not
centered but because of the hassles of moving everything in Photodraw again
I just left it that way. I put the green background in because the jpg of
the page was not completely filling the webpage and the background seemed to
get it all covered.

I always wanted to design the logo and buttons and then go to FP create a
green background and just paste the logo and buttons on the page as I deemed
fit but I was never able to do that. So I created the whole page in
Photodraw, saved it as a jpg. I then inserted the jpg through FP, made the
buttons "hotspots" and everything seemed to work.

I'm not sure about your last two paragraphs or how to do what you suggest.
Can you help me to understand this better?

I'd really like to do this the right way but I guess, based on your reply,
I'm way off base.
I suppose I'll be asking lots more questions until I get this built the
right way.
Thanks again,
Don.........

fido covered some of this in his post.

You're using a green .jpg for background image which is tiling and leaving a
tiny white border creating a quadrant appearance to your web. Dunno why
you're using a totally green image to make your background green you can
just use a color.

Also, that image is stored in a folder named pg1.htg, dunno what
significance the .htg has...I've never seen an extension with by that name
but if it's something you made up you should rename it. You shouldn't use .
in a file or folder name, nor should you use spaces (which will appear as
%20 in your folder or file names), and of course you should eliminate
capitalization too. You may not have a problem with this now or if you are
on a windows server, but somewhere down the road you will wonder why some
people can see images and others can't. You have a lot of renaming to do.

So when I look at your page in my 19" monitor at 1024 with the viewport
maximized, I see a lot of green (like i said 4 quadrants separated by tiny
with borders) and your content up in the top left quad.

And your logo and main image is all one image with hotspots, which will make
it harder for you to modify as you get along in your design. Before you get
much farther down the road, you may want to stop and look at a site that you
like the design of, open it with Frontpage and see how it's done. You can
learn a lot that way.

oh sorry forgot about the optimizing images...

Download IrFanview, it's free, and an incredible image tool. YOu can
optimize, resize, resample, rename, re-re, all in one shot...or batch
process. Great tool.

Thank you for your quick reply. I want to do this right so I'll be
doing what you suggest, or at least trying to do what you suggest. I'm not
sure about the folder named pg1.htg, I didn't create it knowingly.
As I said the green background was created in Photodraw as well as the
jpg file that is my opening page (logo/buttons). I tried just to post the
jpg file on my index html page but I could never get it to "stretch" to the
correct size when I published it. So I tried to paste it over a
"background" but I could never get the background color to match the jpg
file, so I created another jpg file, with the right color, and used it as a
background (kind of like chasing my tail). Now everything seemed to
"stretch" and cover on my page. Confused, you should be me! Anyway, I'm
going to start to redesign that page.
As for naming files, can I just go into the folder list and rename
things?
Will this mess up my website as it stands now?
What should I do about the folders with the htg. file extension? I see
there are two of them; index.htg & pg1.htg.
Also, one more question for now, I see a white file called "animate.js"
what is that and do I need it.
Maybe one more question. Are you saying I should rename the files for
my web pages? If so then it's; no caps. no
spaces, correct?
Thanks so much for taking the time with me,
Don..............
BTW I did download the irfanview, I'll be optimizing (I hope) soon.

Don,

We all started from ground 0 and as time goes by you will learn what works
the best...

Using tables for your layout is a good place to start. One way to "See"
what others are doing is to find a site you like (or want yours to look
like) then use the FrontPage edit button in your browser to bring that page
into FrontPage! There you can see the code and how they did the layout.....

You can't really stretch images. You can create the illusion of a page
stretching to file a browser viewport..but that's Chapter 4, you're still on
Chapter 1.

You can find the color of an object by using the color picker in FP in order
to create a bg color to match an image, or whatever.

Yes, you can rename folders and files as long as you do it within FP and FP
will adjust links. For good measure though after you do a lot of renaming do
a Recalculate Hyperlinks ( Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks) before yo
Publish.

The .htg is weird, a folder shouldn't have an extension...personally I'd
rename it. You have an index.htg too???? Man I dunno you may want to wait
for someone else to weigh in on these two issues.

Yes, rename your pages, no caps, no spaces but you can use _ in lieu of
spaces. No won't mess up anything. Your Page Titles can have spaces caps
etc.

Don

I'll start to rename my files and pages.
I'm working on re-doing that home page. I was able to find the right shade
of green through what you just told me. Now however I'm struggling with the
logo. How do you create logos or things like this for your pages?
Photodraw is leaving a very fine border around the logo and it's a slightly
lighter shade of green.
I can see I've got a lot to learn about creating a website. It would
probably be much easier if I just did everything white.

I don't know Photodraw. I use PS and Xara for images and graphics.

Most graphics/image programs have color pickers...get the color that way or
read the number values to get a precise match.

There's more to learn than most people realize...but it sure is fun.

Don

Thanks for the encouragement. I do have a lot to learn, hopefully I'm up to
the task.
I don't understand tables but I'll look into it..
How do I see a webpage in FP? I can choose "view source" but only see lots
of code I don't understand and it's in notepad. How do I get to FP?
Thanks,
Don...........

Hi, Don

You're getting loads of answers so you're possibly starting to feel
overwhelmed!

Let's deal with a couple of the easier items first so you will see the
results of what you are doing and feel like you're making some
progress.

OK, the green background.

1. Open your home page in FrontPage in Normal view. You should be
able to see your page. Right click somewhere on the page area and
choose Page Properties from the options.

2. A dialog box opens with a row of tabs across the top. Click on the
Background tab.

3. Your version of FP may differ from mine, so bear with me. Find the
checkbox for Background picture and if it has a checkmark in the box,
click in the box to get rid of the checkmark.

4. To see if that has had any effect, click OK to get back to the page
view. With any luck, your green background will have gone.

5. Right click and again choose Page Properties. Open the Background
tab again and look further down the dialog box for Colors. In the box
marked Background the option will be shown as Automatic. Click the
down arrow to see a range of available colours. Down at the bottom you
will see 'More colors'. Click on that and a whole range of colours
will open up for you.

6. Start clicking on the likely-looking greens and watch the Value box
with each different colour. "Your" green is Hex={00, 66, 00}. When
you've found the right shade, click OK, and OK again. Your page should
now have the correct background.

Now the logo.

1. In your graphics program (I'm not familiar with Photodraw), can you
open your complex image with the logo and buttons? Open it, then SAVE
A COPY for safety reasons.

2. Crop all four sides of the image so that you've got only the logo
itself. Once you're happy with that, save it as "logo_whatever.jpg".

3. Now you can insert that image into your page. Try it and see how it
looks. You'll want to position it accurately but don't bother with
that right now.

4. Go through the same procedure with each of the buttons. You want
each button to be a separate image. If you've built that composite
image in the first place, you've probably got those button images
somewhere. Save them all with meaningful names, "button_mail.jpg" etc.

You've now got a set of images and you've reached the point where you
can start using tables as an aid to layout.

Basically, try building your page inside a borderless table, set a
width of around 720 pixels and align it centrally on the page. Now the
enjoyable part starts. Enjoy!

Do you mean how do you open another's webpage with FP?:

If you are using IE to surf, browse to a site you want to open, then on your
top tool bar you should see a button Edit With Frontpage (something like
that)...push it. If you get prompts for un/pw just push Cancel. The page you
are browsing should open in FP... (most of it will anyway).

In your Browser you should have a button at the top (To the right of the
print button if a normal install) that says "Edit" and should have the
FrontPage Icon on it... Click that while viewing a web page..........

Sorry Rob :( I guess I should read all the unread post before posting...

Bob
| Do you mean how do you open another's webpage with FP?:
|
| If you are using IE to surf, browse to a site you want to open, then on
your
| top tool bar you should see a button Edit With Frontpage (something like
| that)...push it. If you get prompts for un/pw just push Cancel. The page
you
| are browsing should open in FP... (most of it will anyway).
|
|
| || Thanks for the encouragement. I do have a lot to learn, hopefully I'm up
| to
|| the task.
|| I don't understand tables but I'll look into it..
|| How do I see a webpage in FP? I can choose "view source" but only see
| lots
|| of code I don't understand and it's in notepad. How do I get to FP?
|| Thanks,
|| Don...........

Don

Thank you "fido". This is what I need. I created all the image files as
you instructed. I'm going to work on the borderless table thing. I know
about tables from other MS programs but I'm not sure how they work here.
BTW, I tried pasting some of the image files and no lines around them as was
before!! However, my buttons look bigger than they did on the original file
I created. Is there a standard size for buttons?
I've learned so much these past two days. I've even learned something about
Photodraw that I never knew before even though I've used the program for a
couple of years.
Any pointers as I start with tables?
Thanks again,
Don............

fido

Thank you "fido". This is what I need. I created all the image files as
you instructed. I'm going to work on the borderless table thing. I know
about tables from other MS programs but I'm not sure how they work here.

Remember you can nest tables inside other tables. You've got your
centred table which contains the whole of the page content.

Say you want your buttons in a vertical row down the left hand side to
form a navigation bar, and you want the rest of the page, surmounted
by the logo, on the right.

Basically you need a two-cell (two-column) table with a narrower
column on the left, just wide enough to contain your buttons. The
remainder of the content occupies and fills the right-hand column.
BTW, I tried pasting some of the image files and no lines around them as was
before!! However, my buttons look bigger than they did on the original file
I created. Is there a standard size for buttons?

As long as they are readable and all the same size, they'll be OK. Use
IrfanView to resize them BEFORE you insert them into the page. Don't
be tempted to use larger images and resize them using FrontPage, as
this can make them appear fuzzy, can distort their shape, and makes
the page loading time longer.

At the moment they seem to be about 107 x 23 pixels, and the logo is
about 387 x 254. That's OK for starters.

Try this and see how it goes: look at the properties for the
two-column table and this time set the cellpadding to 5px. This will
give your various elements a bit of breathing space.

Right-click in the left-hand column, choose Cell properties and set
the cell width to 117px, which is 107px for the buttons and 5px for
the padding on each side.

Insert your buttons, placing a line break between them (Shift +
Enter).

You can experiment later to see how to vary the vertical space between
the buttons.

Go into Cell properties for the right hand column. The two columns
will have been set to 50% by default by FrontPage. Do the sums and set
the cell width to whatever it needs to be - something like 603px. You
could in fact leave the width unspecified and it would work in all
browsers, but it's as well to start with good habits.

For your homework I'll leave you to explore ways of centring the logo
in the right hand column while having a block of text underneath it
which is left-aligned.

That should keep you going for a while! :)

While you're doing all this stuff, take a look at the HTML view from
time to time to familiarise yourself with the appearance of the code,
and to see the effect on the code of all the changes you are making.
One of these fine days you are going to need to edit the HTML by hand,
I kid you not! So it's as well to get used to it before you start
producing really complex pages.
