If you are keeping lots of messages on the server, I suggest moving the
older ones out of the Inbox to an archive folder. This will stop so many
from being downloaded again. POP mail is meant to be downloaded and deleted.
Usually server restrictions will require you to delete the mail or you'll
reach your limit.

Usually it's server burps that cause duplicates to be downloaded, but if you
rebuild Entourage that will cause it also.

To get rid of duplicates use one of the scripts listed here;

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/duplicates.html>

I guess like many people out there I've had the issue of getting my emails
downloaded multiple times on Entourage (about once a week I get an
additional 2000 email messages that get downloaded for the 2nd or 3rd time).
I tried using the various scripts for deleting these emails on the website:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/duplicates.html, but I noticed that
sometimes they delete all the copies of the email. Does anyone know what a
good solution is? I was thrilled to find these scripts but was very
disappointed to see this problem. Even if only a few emails are deleted that
should not be deleted, that's too many.

You asked this same question on Sunday and I replied then you replied back
with the same question. I'm sorry but that's not feedback that will help get
you an answer. You also posted the same question under two different topics.

We are volunteers here. We do our best to help, but please ask in one topic
and give details that will help us help you.

Hi Diane. I am unable to find your reply to my first email. If I had seen
that you had replied I would not have posted the same question again. It's
my first time using newsgroups, so could you please direct me to where your
response to my question is? Thank you very much.

I don't use the Mactopia interface so it would be hard to direct you to the
link. I use the Entourage newsreader which is much easier to use. If you can
do email you can use the Entourage newsreader.

This link explains how to subscribe using the Entourage newsreader:

I also suggest you read "How to Report a Problem"

Hope this helps!

Diana,

sorry for jumping on the tail end of this post, but you are the guru on all things Entourage, so I thought I'd give it a crack.

I am receiving email twice as has been reported here. I saw the comments about the server having too many emails left on it and the problems that this can have.

In my case, I download from several servers / email addresses and I am getting duplicates from all of them. In one case, the account was only set up a few days ago and there are very few emails on that server.

I have absolutely no doubt I have stuffed something up but I just can't see what. Have you any suggestions as to where I might look?

Regards.....Stu

It's always best to start your own thread. Even little things can result in
different answers. Plus it makes it easier to follow.

By adding on, you didn't give your info. Are you in Leopard or Tiger? What
version? What version of Entourage??? 2004, 2008??? What type of account?
(POP, IMAP, Exchange) Give full info for best results like this:

iMac 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, Memory 2GB, Mac OS 10.5.6 Entourage 12.1.5
I have absolutely no doubt I have stuffed something up but I just can't see

If they are POP accounts, do you have set "leave on server" under the
Options tab?

To clear up, you can select to download all from server so you know you are
current. Use one of the remove duplicates scripts to clean up the mess.

Rebuilding Entourage and/or your server can cause duplicates. Servers are
notorious for doing this. Since you are seeing this from several servers at
the same time, we need to examine your setup to be sure the problem is not
on your end. Without details there is no way to know exactly what to
suggest.

I am using the latest version of Entourage. My email server at work
is a Microsoft SBS 2003 - latest version. It is an exchange account.
My problem is that in my "Sent" emails folder I m getting duplicate
emails to download sometimes. I access the exchange account using
Microsoft Outlook from my desktop at work (Vista), iPhone, and also
Entourage from my iMac at home. Could the accessing the exchange
account from all these at different times of the day cause the
problem? I am only getting the duplicates in Entourage. Sometimes
the duplicates are almost not readable because the way they are
formatted. Any ideas on setting changes I can make? Thanks.

Just to be sure...under About Entourage, are you showing 12.1.5?

You don't download your own Sent messages, but are you saying that when
syncing up multiple computers you end up with duplicates?

I'm not an Exchange expert, but I'll ping one of the Exchange MVPs and they
might have a better idea of what's going on. When Exchange is not in the

Thanks for the speedy reply Diane. First, yes I do have 12.1.5
installed. I do download and sync everything with my exchange server
- inbox, sent, deleted, calender, contacts, etc. The only duplicates
I am getting however are in the "Sent" folder for some reason. Also,
under Preferences - Mail and News Preferences - Compose - I have tried
checking and un-checking the box that says "Save copies of sent
messages in the Sent Items folder" and it makes no difference either
way. I wonder why the duplicates are formated so strange and appear
different than the originals? Again, only Entourage is downloading
these strange looking duplicates. I would love suggestions. I will
also check the links that you put in your post. Thanks Diane for
trying to help me. Let me know if you get some more info that might
help. Jeff

Anything more would be a wild guess on my part. Since I don't use Exchange
myself I've just never learned the hard way how to use it. That's the only
way I learn about Entourage is putting it through it's paces.

Because setting on the server can also affect what you see in Entourage, it
could be something there. Hopefully, Bill will be able to offer some
insights.

Hi Jeff!

Sorry to take so long to respond. You jumped into the middle of someone
else's thread, so I wasn't paying attention to secondary questions.

A couple of things you should try:

First, as a precaution, copy your Exchange Sent Items folder to a folder
under "On My Computer". You'll have this as a backup if messages get lost.

1. If you see this in just one or a handful of folders then right-click
or Control-click that folder, select Folder Properties and click the
Empty button to empty the cache. You can also select the account itself
and empty the cache for all of your folders.

2. If that doesn't work then use Entourage --> Switch Identity... to
create a new identity. Set up your Exchange account in the new identity
and let everything sync. Use this for a while and if everything goes
well then you can switch back to your old identity, export any
information from there and import it into the new identity.

This will not bring over metadata like projects and categories.

Hope this helps!

bill dear, i really appreciate your responding to my problem. i have
tried setting up entourage from scratch a few times but to no avail,
as well as emptying the cache. occasionally i get the strangely
formatted duplicate "Sent" emails - only for that folder. The problem
is only in the "Sent" folder for some reason. I access my SBS 2003
exchange account from both my desktop on my internal lan, and my home
imac, and a Macbook laptop when on the road, and also my iPhone. I
use both Outlook 2007 and Entourage. Could using the different
machines to send mail be the problem? What about making some changes
to my SBS 2003 exchange settings? Thanks again for any help you can
provide. Jeff Tarver

Most of these duplicates are coming from emails i send from my iphone
for some reason. i just noticed the correlation with my iphone for
most. why would that be? jeff
