Edit w/ FP button no longer opens webs from IE

I've been using FrontPage for oh, about 7 years now and the quickest way to
open a website or particular web page has always been to surf to it in IE and
then click the Edit w/ FrontPage button. It opens FrontPage, pulls up the
website prompting you for the user and pass for that site and then the page
you want to edit.

After upgrading to Office 2003 (already had FP 2003) the Edit w/ FP button
no longer does that and instead pulls up a local copy of the page which
serves no purpose. Now in order to open a website and make a quick change, I
have to manually open FrontPage, click File > Open Site > Choose or type in
the url > Click Open > Put in the user and pass > then choose the page I need
to edit.

This is extremely annoying considering how easy it's been for the past 7
years to just open a web page with one click of the Edit w/ FP button in IE.
I don't know why the Office 2003 upgrade disabled that function but I tried
uninstalling and reinstalling FP 2003 but it still won't open the website
when I click the Edit w/ FP button, just a local copy.

Does anyone know how to restore this function to the Edit w/ FP button in IE?

I can't go on opening websites like this...having to take 7 steps to do what
I used to be able to do in one step.

I just want the solution, not your opinion on the "proper" way to open sites
in FP.

Try clearing your temporary internet and history files.

Also, when you upgrade to 2003, you "should" recalculate hyperlinks and then do a full publish so
that 2003 is "in sync" with your web site.

Something in the Office 2003 upgrade kill this functionality and I have read
posts from other FP users who experienced the same thing after upgrading to
Office 2003.

I'm thinking this could be specific to your PC - I just tried it with FP2003
on three sites at two different hosting companies and it worked on all of
them. It launched FP, asked me for the password, and it opened the site.

Well, it may be specific to my pc but I've seen other people on different
support boards with the same problem.

In any event, how do I solve the problem? How do I get the edit w/ FP to
actually open the site and ask me for the user and pass and stop opening a
local copy of the page?

What's the solution?

That's not it. It happens with ALL FP sites and I'm using IE6 anyway. I also
happen to be my own host provider with my own servers.

I can't stress enough that all problems started after I upgraded from Office
2002 to 2003 but I can't very well revert back to 2002 at this point.

I tried uninstalling FP and reinstalling with with a stand along version of
FP 2003 but the problem still persists. Whenever I click edit w/ FP in IE
browser, it opens up a local version of the page and never actually opens the
web i.e. asking for user and pass.

Any help with getting the button working properly again would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Don't know if this will help in anyway but here's what happens with I click
on the Edit w/ FP in IE now:

1. It opens FP
2. Opens up a local copy of the page with all images broken
3. Whatever the name of the page is (index.html, page.htm, etc.) it gets
trumped with [1] like this, index[1]html, page[1].htm, etc.

Obviously this is just pointless as it's not letting me edit the actual page
so I have to close the page and go to file > open web > and find the web and
the page I wanna edit which is really inconvienient.

Again, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

What's in the IE address bar when you do this?

hhtp://www.something.com/pagename.htm

Same issue regardless of page extension or whether or not you use www or
not. Click on Edit w/ FrontPage in IE and it brings up pagename[1].htm
without actually opening the web.

Someone has to know how to fix this without reloading my OS. This is
rediculous.

First of all, clear out all of your IE temp (cache files) and windows temp
files. Then, report back to us after you have tried it again.

Done that, like 50 times now. Dumped all IE and Windows temp files, deleted
histories, everything.

Is there some IE temp file (like a dat file) I can delete that will get
regenerated?

Maybe you host has disable the ability to edit with FP in this manner.

I have several computers and they open properly when using the Edit button
on those computers but not my main design computer again, since the upgrade
to office 2003. Try using the edit w/ FP button and I'm sure it will ask you
for a username and pass. My computer won't do that.

It's not my host!

The problem is specific to my pc.

I have several pc's and the edit w/ FP button works fine on all of them
except for my main design computer again, after I upgraded to office 2003.

Here's something that may give you a clue...Whenever I try to edit a FP site
using the Edit w/ FP Button in IE, it opens a local copy of the site and in
the Title bar of FP it'll show something like this;

c:/Documen~1/JimmyP~1/Tem/Temporary Internet
Files/Content.IE5/QTGZOZWF/pagenname.htm

Yes, I have dumped my Temp Internet Files, Cookies, History, even deleted
the Content.IE5 folder but problem remains.

I went to http://www.jimmypowell.com in IE, clicked on Edit with FrontPage,
it brought up the password dialog box which said "Secured FrontPage on
www.jimmypowell.com and asked for the User name and password. When I clicked
Cancel, it opened the home page in FrontPage.

When I go to one of my sites in IE ( http://www.core-ct.state.ct.us/ ) and
click on Edit with FrontPage, it brings up the dialog box, but it says
"Connecting to www.core-ct.state.ct.us " - not "Secured FrontPage on ...".

I don't know what to attribute the difference to, but there is a difference.

Let me say this one last time...

IT'S NOT THE DAMN HOST!

I have 4 computers and the edit w/ FP works properly on 3 of them but the
one computer in which the button was working fine before, is not working
since the upgrade to office 2003.

I have dumped ALL temp files everywhere.

And oh yeah, it's NOT the host.

The problem is specific to my pc but I'd like to find a way to fix it.
