Peter,

I'm confused. Last night I checked right before I went to bed, and you had
a very detailed explanation but it's not here today. Do you have any idea
what happened to it? ?

so it should look like this?

(default) REG_5Z (value not set)
InstallCmd REG_5Z rundll32 setupap,Install-in/Section MSMAIL 132.msmail.inf
MAPIX REG_5Z 1
CMCDLLNAME32 REG_5Z mapi32..dll
CMCDLLNAME REG_5Z mapi.dll
CMC REG_5Z 1
MAPIXVER REG_5Z 1.0.0.1
OLEmessaging REG_5Z 1

Yes, except in step (c) use MAPI, then CMCDLLNAME32, then CMCDLLNAME, then
CMC, then MAPIXVER, then OLEMessaging
on step D, put 2,3,4

No...
when you put MAPI in step (c), put 1 in step (d)
when you put CMCDLLNAME32 in step (c), put mapi32.dll in step (d)
when you put CMCDLLNAME in step (c), put mapi.dll in step (d)
when you put CMC in step (c), put 1 in step (d)
when you put MAPIXVER in step (c), put 1.0.0.1 in step (d)
when you put OLEMessaging in step (c), put 1 in step (d)

Mindy said:
Okay got that done. . .

so with the following, do steps a,b,c then on step D, put 2,3,4 for
CMCDLLNAME, CMC, MAPIXVER, and OLEMessaging?

CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1
:

Yes, select the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem

Then, to insert the MAPIX value (for example)
a. Right-click and slect New|String value. A new REG_SZ value is created
with name "New Value #1"
b. You should be able to overtype the name with MAPIX (unless you have
already created that value
c. Double-click the MAPIX value. A dialog box appears
d. type the value you need, in this case 1, and click OK.
e. You should see a line under "Windows Messaging Subsystem" with
something
like

MAPIX REG_SZ 1

If you are uncertain because you have done all that and the merge to
e-mail
options are still greyed out, then something else is probably wrong (and
in
that case, I do not know what it might be).

Peter Jamieson

I'm sorry I'm asking all these questions. I just want to make sure I'm
doing
it right. I need to put these under windows messaging subsysten,
right?
MAPI=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

I have windows xp
:

What name?

I mean the names and values as in step (b):

MAPI=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

i.e. the first name is MAPI, and the value is 1
the second name is CMCDLLNAME32 and the value is mapi32.dll
etc.

Which version of Windows are you using?

Peter Jamieson
I just tried again and now it's letting me do it. I am the
administrator
so
I don't know what was going on Friday. before I proceed I want to
describe
what I have in these files. In the windows messaging subsystem
folder,
on
the right-hand side of the window, there are (default) REG_5Z (value
not
set)
and InstallCmd REG_5Z rundll32 setupap,Install-in/Section MSMAIL 132
msmail.inf

Back on the left-hand side of the window, under the windows
messaging
subsystem there is a MSMapiApps. If I click on that, on the
right-hand
side
of the window it has (default) REG_5Z (value not set), choosusr.dll
REG_5Z,
inetsw95.exe REG_5Z, and MAP1 REG_5Z

Your directions say (I'm on letter G and H in your directions) to
name
as
above . What name? and what value?

:

I just checked again here and it seems OK, so...

....it is possible that you do not have permission to update this
particular
part of the regiistry, e.g. if you are not logged in with
Administrator
permissions. That would be quite likely if your machine is on a
network
and
maintained by someone else - in that case you would need to contact
them
and
ask them to sort this out for you.

Peter Jamieson

i'm following your steps but when I click new string, it says
cannot
create
value. error writing to the registry..

:

Yes, for Word 2003 I believe it's the registry you need to fix
rather
than
WIN.INI.

It may be easier to import the necessary values into the
registry -
there's
now a page at

http://tips.pjmsn.me.uk/t0002.htm

which covers the existing ground and provides the contents of a
suitable
..reg file for copying/pasting into a Notepad file.

Peter Jamieson

Peter Jamieson knows more about this, so maybe he will chip
in?
However
from one of his earlier posts -

You will need to edit the registry. Proceed with caution!

In your Windows folder, locate and run regedit.exe. If you're
on
an
older
version of Windows you might need to use regedt32.exe.

Look for a key called

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem

I would be surprised if it was not there in recent versions of
Windows,
but if it is not, add it.

If it is there, I would expect to see
a. A subkey called MSMapiApps
b. A number of "values" with the same names as are in the
above
list -
MAPI, MAPIX etc.
c. An additional value called InstallCmd

If you cannot see the values, you need to add them. For each
of
the
values in the above list
d. Right click "Windows Messaging Subsystem" and select
New|String
Value.

Note that although some of these items have numeric values,
they
should
all
be entered as String Values.
e. Enter the name, as above
f. Double click on the name. A dialog box appears. Enter the
value
(e.g.
for the name CMCDLLNAME, enter mapi.dll) and click OK
g. You may also need to create the InstallCmd value, although
I
rather
doubt it. I am less sure about this and about what should go
in
there.
On
my system, the value is:
rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection MSMAIL 132 msmail.inf

When you have done them all, press F5. Then close all copies
of
Word
and
restart it - or restart Windows, then restart Word and see if
the
e-mail
option has appeared.

OK, just to be sure I didn't miss anything really obvious, I double-checked
here with
a. Windows XP
b. Outlook Express configured as my default e-mail program
c. no [mail] section in WIN.INI

It appears that exactly one value in the registry makes Word display the
relevant e-mail option, and that is the MAPIX item. So just in case there
has been any miscommunication, one last thing you could try is to edit copy
the following text into a .reg file (let's call it mapix.reg) and use the
File|Import menu option in the registry editor to import the value.

The file is as follows - copy/paste it into a Notepad file. There should be
4 lines. The second line is blank.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem]
"MAPIX"="1"

Here, I usually have a full version of Office including Outlook, which may
be what is causing the difference. Unfortunately, although it is clear that
Word looks at the MAPIX option, I do not know what else it checks before
displaying the relevant options.
Where would you suggest getting further help?

I suggest that you go to

Do I need to delete

No.

No. When you import the .reg file, the registry editor will create the key
(and any bits of the "path" to the key) that it needs. If there is no MAPIX
key, it will create it. If there is an existing MAPIX key in the right
place, it should overwrite the value. It will not overwrite any other keys
or values or delete any other keys or values.
Okay, I deleted the mail section in the win.ini file.

OK, you din't need to do that (I only did it to make sure that it was the
MAPIX key in the registry that was having the desired effect). I would put
the entries back into WIN.INI.

By the way, if you do end up going to Microsoft technical support (or
anywhere else) and find the solution to this problem I would appreciate it
if you could post the answer here.

MAPIXVER REG_5Z 1.0.0.1
OLEmessaging REG_5Z 1

:

so with the following, do steps a,b,c
Yes, except in step (c) use MAPI, then CMCDLLNAME32, then
CMCDLLNAME,
then
CMC, then MAPIXVER, then OLEMessaging

on step D, put 2,3,4

No...
when you put MAPI in step (c), put 1 in step (d)
when you put CMCDLLNAME32 in step (c), put mapi32.dll in step
(d)
when you put CMCDLLNAME in step (c), put mapi.dll in step (d)
when you put CMC in step (c), put 1 in step (d)
when you put MAPIXVER in step (c), put 1.0.0.1 in step (d)
when you put OLEMessaging in step (c), put 1 in step (d)

Peter Jamieson

Okay got that done. . .

so with the following, do steps a,b,c then on step D, put
2,3,4
for
CMCDLLNAME, CMC, MAPIXVER, and OLEMessaging?

CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1
:

Yes, select the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem

Then, to insert the MAPIX value (for example)
a. Right-click and slect New|String value. A new REG_SZ
value
is
created
with name "New Value #1"
b. You should be able to overtype the name with MAPIX
(unless
you
have
already created that value
c. Double-click the MAPIX value. A dialog box appears
d. type the value you need, in this case 1, and click OK.
e. You should see a line under "Windows Messaging
Subsystem"
with
something
like

MAPIX REG_SZ 1

If you are uncertain because you have done all that and the
merge
to
e-mail
options are still greyed out, then something else is
probably
wrong
(and
in
that case, I do not know what it might be).

I'm sorry I'm asking all these questions. I just want to
make
sure I'm
doing
it right. I need to put these under windows messaging
subsysten,
right?
MAPI=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

I have windows xp
:

What name?

I mean the names and values as in step (b):

MAPI=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

i.e. the first name is MAPI, and the value is 1
the second name is CMCDLLNAME32 and the value is
mapi32.dll
etc.

Which version of Windows are you using?
