Entourage 2008 Continuously Crashing

A

Aaron Marks

I'm having a problem with Entourage 2008 continuously crashing on my
Power Mac G5 workstation. This G5 is running Mac OS X Server 10.5.2
(not functioning as a server in any way). The computer never had any
problems back when I was beta testing Office 2008 (I have since then
formatted the drives and this is a new install of OS X).

I'm connecting to an Exchange 2007 SP1 server and I have Entourage 2008
installed on another Mac of mine; a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I am not
having any problems with Entourage 2008 on the MBP which is totally
disturbing me since I can't make any sense out of this.

One more piece of background information is that this is basically
happening on the first sync on a brand-new install of OS X 10.5.2 with
all of the updates. Entourage will appear to be syncing just fine and
sometimes even be capable of running for up to 5 minutes, but it always
crashes with the same error message.

Thank you for any help that can be provided.

I have posted the crash report below hoping that someone here can
possibly make some sense out of it:

Since I still haven't received any replies, I figured that it might be
helpful to provide some more information that I know I would want if I
was the one answering my own question.

1. My OS X user account is an Administrator account that is directly
part of the GID 80 local "Administrators" group. The account is a
local Active Directory account (as in not network or portable).
2. My G5 is joined to both an Open Directory and Active Directory
server. Open Directory is used for preference management, while Active
Directory is used for SSO Authentication.
3. I have downloaded all of the current updates as of 4/6/2008 for OS
X 10.5.2 and for Office:mac 2008 12.0.1.
4. My computer has 1.5GB of RAM, dual 2.0GHz G5 processors, and RAID0
2x160GB hard drives.
5. When I previously ran the Entourage 2008 beta, everything was
stable up until after I formatted the hard drives, reinstalled the OS,
and then intalled Office 2008 with all the updates.
6. On the server end of things, my organization is running Exchange
2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 R2.
7. The only thing that has changed recently in my organization is that
a Windows Server 2008 domain controller was added as a beginning point
to an eventual migration to Server 2008 on all of the servers.
Currently the server is just acting as an addition DC/GC/DNS server.
8. I have tried using both Kerberos and standard authentication, both
have the same results.
9. I have tried blanking out the LDAP and Public folder fields in
hopes that the bare minimum would lead me to a source of crashing.
10. I do not have sync services enabled to sync with iCal and Address Book.

Please help. Thank you.

Aaron -- just want to chime in that Entourage crashed on me 3 times
today. I upgraded to a MacBook 2.4, OS 10.5.2, and Office 2008 last
week. I earlier posted about problems with the Calendar, but today's
crashes are something new. Crash reports were generated and sent to
MS. I copied them too, but have no idea how to read them.

Slight OT: Is it possible to run Entourage 2004 with everything else
2008?

Randy,

Being that you are running on an Intel platform and judging by the fact
that I have MacBooks with the same specs as yours running just fine,
I'm almost positive that you are experiencing a completely different
problem. Your Entrouage 2004 questions is especially off-topic... you
would be much better off starting a different thread so that this one
doesn't get OT. Thank you.

I think that the problem may have fixed itself. I haven't used my
Power Mac G5 for the last few days and I just added my email account
back into Entourage 2008 and it appears to be working.

I think it is possible that something wasn't properly replicating in my
Active Directory due to the Windows Server 2008 adprep that was ran
this last weekend. It may have taken some server reboots and time for
the AD to properly clear up any issues.

Thanks for being so helpful Microsoft Support! (please go back to

I also just wanted to add that even though it ended up working out... I
had to sit through Entourage crashing twice to get my mailbox synced
up. With that said, I've been running for over 24 hours without a
crash.

Hi Aaron

You mentioned that Entourage crashes constantly after first sync. Which
type of data did you select when you first enable sync service in Entourage?
Which option (combine, replace Entourage, replace ical..etc) did you choose
to sync the data?

Thanks

Did you read my post/thread?

I said that this has nothing to do with Sync Services since I disabled
that along with a few other things like Spotlight indexing.

There is definitely a bug here though that is with some Microsoft
product, be it Exchange 2007 SP1, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows
Server 2008, or Entourage 2008 12.0.1. I'm not sure which, but I
replicated the bug on 3 different installs (2 OS X Server installs and
1 OS X Client install, 10.5.2 on both). It would be in Microsoft's
best interest to have someone contact me about this to track down the
source of the problem.

If you would like to have a Microsoft Engineer get in touch with me to
work up a solution to this problem, please have them contact me through
my contact page on my blog at http://blog.aaronmarks.com

Thank you.

You sound very frustrated. Microsoft tech I don't think responds here
at all - only MVPs who are volunteers. Entourage has only crashed on
me once and it was just the database corrupted. It told me that and
provided a dialogue to repair, which I ran and then away it goes. It
runs all the time. I never close Entourage.

I would suggest, in a case like yours, if you aren't getting the
answers in this or other forums, you just open a case with Microsoft
telephone tech support. You'll only be billed as long as the issue is
solvable. You also are entitled to two free support incidences.

Apparently the problem hasn't fixed itself at all actually. I had just
waited through it crashing enough times the first time around to finish
syncing my whole mailbox.

After upgrading the 12.1.0 I had a problem where it kept crashing while
upgrading my Entourage database. Since I couldn't get this to finish,
I deleted my Microsoft User Data folder and resynced everything. As
soon as I started resyncing my mailbox, Entourage started crashing
exactly the same way again.

I have seen numerous problems with Office 2008 (and many other 3rd
party applications) behaving incredibly poorly on the PowerPC platform.
It looks like the move to the Intel platform may not have been as
"Universal" as well all hoped for. It is just sad that I feel like I
have to throw out my incredibly nice Power Mac G5. It is obvious
though that this problem is PowerPC specific though because I don't
have any of these problems on my MacBook Pros or Mac Pros.

Are you saying this is an entirely new Microsoft User Data folder?

Have you tested in a new User. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New
User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test Entourage there.

From above, I am assuming when you restarted that it asked you to create a
new identity, correct. Just making sure the Database Daemon wasn't still
running and using the files from the trash.

If possible, a few other things to try:

1. Is it possible to try and use a different Exchange account, create a
test one and see if this account still fails or not.
2. Would you have another PPC machine you could setup and see if you crash
there as well.
3. If you use the same account on your PPC as your MBPro, you could copy
the Microsoft User Data folder from the Intel to the PPC and see what
happens when you launch it using a fully downloaded identity. Make sure
that you quit Entourage and the Database Daemon before the copy.

Sorry for the large things to try, but the log you sent for the crash may
not have been seen by any other user but yourself is my guess. Likely all
the crash reports that were sent may have all come from you. We were not
able to repro this when we first saw the crash report or tack down what was
happening. The above may help narrow down if there might be a unique
problem to your machine or your account is my best guess right now.

You noted still crashing in SP1, so could you send me a copy of that crash
report, it will let me track down if we have any other people running into
the same crash. (Some data points changes with each every version).

Yes Doug, I did make sure to stop the database daemon before deleting
the Microsoft User Data folder to create a new identity. I have also
tried this and reproduced it on another PPC mac of mine, a PowerMac G4
MDD (2x1.25GHz with 1GB of RAM). I have reproduced it independently
from both machine or local user account that is used.

I have not tried using a different Exchange account, but I will try
doing this soon. If it is the Exchange account/mailbox then what would
that mean? It would still be a problem with Entourage technically
wouldn't it since this mailbox is used on many PC's running Outlook
2003/2007 and Intel Macs running Entourage 2008.

Here are the answers to your questions by #:

1) I will try this next, but as I stated above, I would I like to know
what this means ^^^^
2) Same problem
3) No crash when copied, so it seems to be in the downloading part from
the Exchange server.

Below is the new crash report for my PowerMac G5 running Entourage 12.1.0...

I just wanted to add that I once again synced my mailbox perfectly on a
Core Duo MacBook that a client gave me yesterday. I am now 100%
certain that this is a PPC platform specific problem. Could someone
please put this problem in the correct hands of someone at Microsoft
and please contact me through the contact page on my blog @
http;//blog.aaronmarks.com. I will provide my phone number if
necessary and am willing to work with a developer/engineer on this
problem via an EasyAssist session. I'll even drop my PowerMac G5 off
in Redmond for a month with the Mac BU if that will help (I live in
Seattle).

This helps narrow down the problem and diagnose if it might be account
specific. I.E. Something in your account is causing the crash on PPC only.
Or if there is a more general issue with the Exchange deployment that is
causing the problem.

You an also isolate it more by using the progress window to see what "item"
is syncing when you get the crash. This may help lead you to the particular
folder causing the crash. "item" you can narrow down to a folder, address
book, calendar, message, contact, etc. that might be causing the problem.

Were you able to try a different account by any chance?

Thanks, tells me it is PPC only. Unknown about the "downloading" part, the
call stack doesn't have much new info to see where the crash is.

BTW, not in the public news groups every day so didn't see this message or
your other one till today. But will have somebody contact you directly to
help diagnose this, other option that is always open is to contact Microsoft
Support for immediate help.
