Excel file keeps saying it's in use... but no one has it open?!

Hi Blaine,

I've performed some research on this issue and discussed it with other
support engineers.

After all the tests that we have done, it seems to be a Windows 2000
server file sharing issue rather than an Excel one. In order to identify
that, please copy all of the data from within this file to a new
spreadsheet and then place this spreadsheet into the same fodler as the
orginal. If the problem reappears then we can say the issue is on the
server side and we may need to submit the post to the Windows 2000 server
newsgroup.

I hope the information helps. Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao

Hi Blaine,

From your email I understand you were wondering how
to post this issue to the Win2K group and not have to
repeat all this over again. Here is the summary for
this issue you may want to post in the newsgroup.

Issue Description
=================

After opening a file on the server and then closing
it the file it will not open for any other clients.
The meesage that the file is in use appears <Please
type the exact error message here>. Rebooting the
server makes the issue go away until the first user
of this file trys to reopen the file. This issue only
happens on a particular server running Windows 2000
and a particular file. The problem does not occur if
we place the file on the local drive or place the
file on another server.

Suggestions Tried
=================

1. Clear the temporary folders.
2. Disable any anti-virus programs on the server.
3. Send file to some Excel folks and they tested and
all worked fine on their side.

For more information, please refer to the post titled
"Excel file keeps saying it's in use... but no one
has it open?!" in the newsgroup
"microsoft.public.office.misc" (issue id: 20683460).

Sincerely,
