Flash Files Not Displayed

G

Guest

I downloaded the Macromedia player. Then downloaded four
free files from a Web site. They were in a zip file which
I unzipped (spincube_01.fla, spincube_02.fla, etc). Then
in FrontPage I inserted them into one of my pages using
Insert > Pictures > Moview in Flash Fomat. They did not
show up in Preview view nor when I published the page. It
looks like the browser keeps trying to download files but
nothing shows up. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Clive

Are you sure you have a Flash player installed?

If not, you need to download and install one. That may be
the reason for the download prompts.

Jim,
I can't be sure. After I download the Macromedia Flash
player from the Macromedia Web site (it only takes a few
seconds), I don't see any indication in my IE browser
about the Macromedia Flash player. Is there something I
should be able to see?
Thanks,
Clive

Jim,
As I mentioned in my other reply, I don't see any evidence
in my browser that I have it. Although I get the animated
image when I go the Macromedia Flash player test page.

Did you import the files into your web prior to inserting/link to them? Check your IE settings to be
sure you have animations enable.

No, I moved them into a Web folder using Windows Explorer.

You need to import them into your current open FP web via the import function.

If you double-click one of these files (spincube_01.fla,
spincube_02.fla, etc) in Windows Explorer, does it play?

If not, and if other .fla files do play OK, then the problem is with
the .fla files.

Thomas,
Thanks for info. As you suggested, I imported them into my active Web page from the folder that I had moved them to using Windows Explorer. But I still could not see the flash file in the FrontPage2003 Preview mode. Also, when I double clicked on of the FLA files in Explorer, I got the message asking what program do you want to use to run the file. When I browsed to find the Macromedia flash player, it was nowhere to be found. It's as if the flash player download did not work only I got the "successful" message after a couple of seconds after clicking the button on the Macromedia Download site. This occurs in both my laptop Windwows XP Pro and desktop Windows 2000 Pro.

After you have imported them, you need to reinsert/link to them, then use the File Menu | Preview in
browser, not the Preview tab.

Jim,

Thanks for the info. I tried double clicking as you suggested, but Windows XP Pro asked me what program I want to use. When I browsed around for the Macromedia player, it was nowhere to be seen. It's as if my flash player did not get downloaded properly from the Macromedia Flash Player Download site even though the "successfully downloaded" message appears with the animated graphic.

Thomas,
I did as you suggested. When I bring up the browser, it appears that it's trying to load the flash file but it nevers comes up. When I right click where the flash file area, I get the message "movie not loaded."
Thanks,

Uninstall the flash app.

I don't recall having to install the Flash app, so I think IE install it automatically, and then if
you hit a page that requires a updated version, it will prompt you.

Thomas,
I looked in the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
The only thing I found for Macromedia was the Shockwave
Player which I installed yesterday to see it that would
help. So I uninstalled it but I'm still not able to view
my FLA file. I went to the Macromedia Download Center to
their test page that show if the Flash Player is installed
in my browser and it indicated it was. I think your
correct about it being installed automatically. Maybe
these Flash files I downloaded are faulty. I got them
from http://www.taengo.com/download.html. Do you know of
a place I can get feee sample flash files for testing?
Thanks,
Clive

Clive,

Those .fla are Flash source (templates) that you would download, and then open in the Macromedia
Flash Application/Editor version that supports Flash 3.

The preview that you actually see on the download page is .swf file (shockwave file format).

IE can only display the compiled file and FP can not open these files for editing.

Well, you have to get the Flash Player downloaded and installed
properly.

It it's an exe file, you need to run the exe file.

If it's a zip file, you need to unzip it and then run the setup
program or whatever.

If it's an ActiveX control or plug-in, you might have security
settings or a virus filter or something that's getting in the way.

Sorry I can't be more specific. If more specific is what you need,
then please explain exactly how you're trying to install the Flash
Player
(including URLs).

Jim,
Thanks for the info. I got the Flash files from http://www.taengo.com/download.html . Thomas Rowe told me they are Flash source (templates) that need to be opened in the Macromedia Flash Application/Editor version that supports Flash 3. Thomas said that the preview that I saw on the download page is an .SWF file (ShockWave file format). He then told me that IE can only display the compiled file and FP can not open these files for editing.

So maybe this means I'll have to learn how to create my own Flash files. I was hoping to find some Flash files somewhere that I could use for testing in FP but it looks like I went to the wrong Web site.
