FP 2003 Crashes while inserting link in Windows Vista

D

David Berry

Have you tried the usual repairs
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
3) In Windows Explorer Find and delete the file CMDUI.PRF
4) Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins
5) Run a Repair / Reinstall on FP & IE

You can also get FP Cleaner at http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
which will do most of this for you.

I have just installed Windows Vista (Ultimate) and all the updates, patches,
etc on my desktop computer and installed FP2003.

Everything seems to be working fine but when I access my website directly
from within FP (live) and try to add a hyperlink on any page, the program
(FP2003) crashes.

Any idea?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Dave,

While that is very often a cure for those types of problems..I don't believe
it works in this case. (At least it hasn't for me) When I use FrontPage on
Vista it crashes for me as well using the insert hyperlink dialogue..if I
navigate to a page to create the link. The only workaround I have come up
with is to manually type in the page name for the link (nextpage.htm) or
whatever it is.

That's strange Joe because I'm running FP2003 on Vista with no problems. I
wonder if it's because I upgraded from Windows XP with FP2003 already
installed?

Hi Dave,

Actually that could be a possibility. I have done a few different
installations with Vista and FrontPage. The current one (where I am having
the problem) was installing FrontPage after a clean install of Vista. The
reason I needed to do that is when I upgraded to Vista leaving all programs
installed..I ran into a lot of compatibility issues (mostly drivers) with
other programs. When I eventually then did a clean install....and later
loaded FrontPage...I noticed the hyperlink crashing issue. Hmmmm I wonder? I
do know for sure that others have seen this issue multiple times though..If
anyone who is reading this and having the issue..it would be good to know if
you had FrontPage installed before the upgrade to Vista..or if you installed
FrontPage after.

Hi Stefan,

I went to try it and then realized I already had that entry in the registry
(I think from trying it earlier at some point) Unfortunately no change
though..inserting a hyperlink via navigating to the page still crashes
FrontPage.

F

FrontPage /Vista Frustrated

Yes, That is what I'm experiencing also, we updated a whole college lab with
new computers fresh from the factory with Vista Ultimate. Then installed FP
2003. Every computer crashes when trying to use the hyper link tool.

However, one staff machine we upgraded (is that a joke?) to VISTA is working
with FP 2003 - Hyperlink tool seems to work well, unfortunately that is the
instructor's station - whom just using the code is no problem.

Since this lab is for student use it is creating a problem. If MS doesn't
quickly release a fix/patch. We're probably going to switch to Dreamweaver,
campus wide that seems VERY stable on Vista. Web Expression is not worth it
for our purposes.

I

Ian

Same problem here. My Vista was installed by Dell in a new Inspiron. I added
Front Page, and it crashes with each attempt to navigate to a hyperlink on
the site.

How will we know when MS has a fix?

I can't believe FP2003 was never tested by the Microsoft on Vista. The
entire internet is made up of hyperlinks, yet this most important
functionality of any web designing program was not tested in FrontPage on
Vista by Microsoft. Sure we can switch over to the code view and insert the
hyperlink but that's not what we bought FrontPage for.

Apparently this problem was detected and reported at least one month ago (if
Google is to be believed) and yet Microsoft has not been able to fix this.
Glitches on NASA rockets are solved within days before the launch... Go
figure!

Come on Microsoft, fix this now or put a huge warning on your website not to
use FP with Vista. I guess the choice is either to switch over to other web
designing program or to go back to Win XP (I prefer the latter) because
after all, how long one has to wait for Microsoft to deliver the fix/patch.

Simply inexcusable!

Sorry for the rant.. :-(

Fair enough, but you surely agree that a lot of others are having this
problem? Honestly, do you really think it will/should take this long to
release a patch for this? Please understand I am not a MS basher. Like many
others, my whole career is built around MS but to say that just because
others are not having this problem, this is not a priority for MS or it
would take several months for MS to release a fix for this is something hard
to swallow.

We are not talking about any drastic change in the program here that would
need months of recreation, testing etc etc. Creating hyperlink is 'the most
single element' in any web designing program and if that is broken, even for
25% of the users, the program becomes useless and therefore, I submit, MS
should make it a priority and fix this problem without further runarounds or
excuses.

Sorry again for the rant; nothing personal against you David. I have used
yours and other MVPs advices in the past and appreciate your invaluable
contributions. It's just frustrating to know that everything was working
fine until Vista came along!

Well, actually, er... the Challenger gasket problem was known to the
design engineers, who repeatedly told management that the planned
launch temps were outside the design envelope and that the seals would
fail. But, management decided for management reasons to launch anyway.

Sound familiar ?

joe,

I just installed Vista Ultimate with an old OS of XP SP2 with FP 2003
installed on it. I use FP on a daily basis and have never had any problems
other then the common querks of FP. Once I installed Ultimate I found the
same problem with creating hyperlinks. I tried to recreate the Images localy
and remotely thinking this was the issue of an all ready pre-existing image
with a hyperlink. I tried changing the properties of the link for some image
mapping features and any way I go about the process FP bombs out. I don't
believe that its an issue with a ne install before or after the Vista
install, rather a compability issue with FP and Vista, I even tried updating
extensions in the settings fields. I even tried typing in the full path of
the link, I get the same responce. I have resulted to installing FP 2003 on a
web server and accessing it remotely just to do this one feature. If anyone
has any other workaround, It would be truly appreciated. . .
