Help with Publisher 2007 - images

It could be a permissions issue but I may have been wrong...IF...Publisher's
index page is supposed to be in index_files folder then that folder should
be browsable. IF NOT then the index_files folder should NOT be browsable.

In addition...if the main index page is SUPPOSED to be in the index_folder
it is not and may be why the links to the images are incorrect...because ALL
the images are in the index_folder.

Dunno if I'm making any sense any more :)

FTP anon or pw should not make any difference regarding index_files folder
permissions I don't think.

THANK YOU! for all your work. I will go get the file now, see what I can do,
and try not to mess it up. I really apprecate all that you've done. I'll
post back and let you know how I make out.

The index.htm file is the home page and the first page of a Publisher web
publication. The index_files folder contains the other .htm files...the
other pages of a site and all the supporting graphics, and no it is not
supposed to be browsable. That is what is so weird about being able to
access her index_files folder. You should get a 403 error.

My guess was based on her saying that she had used 'anonymous' and from what
I remember, you never choose that option with ftp uploading.

But this was the least of her problems. When I downloaded her file and
tested it both locally and after uploading the html files it to a test site,
the links did point to my C drive. Somehow her navigation system was
corrupted. I just haven't figured out how, nor how to easily fix it. I ended
up rebuilding the pub file instead.

Anyway, let's see if making the change in the setting from anonymous to
normal fixes it. If not we can look elsewhere.

It appears that the index_files folder needs cleaning out. There are a lot
of old HTM files in there that are not working.

OK - we're doing so much better! Two things:
" Mouseover the main navbar links one at a time.
Look in the status bar at the bottom of the IE window and you will see
'index_files/PageXXX.htm' in the status bar from the home page. And if you
don't see the status bar at the bottom of the IE window, then go to View >
Status bar and make sure it is clicked."

I couldn't figure out how to do this. Status bar isn't an option in my
View. I couldn't see anything at the bottom of the IE window.

I published to the Web, and it all works, images are there! However, other
than the home page, the names include index_files. What did I miss? I admit
that I didn't really follow the lower conversation with Rob from today.

To publish, I saved to desktop. I was able to upload index_files to / with
filezilla, but couldn't get see index.htm in filezilla. I could see it on my
destop, but couldn't find it with Filezilla. So I opened my File manager at
Surf Speedy, and uploaded it from there. I also saved it to /. However,
when I again looked into my File manager, both were under /public_html. Did
I save them to the right place?

Thank you!

I used Normal, just now, (not anon) when uploading with Filezilla.
I was able to upload both index_files & index.htm that way. But I'm still
seeing index_files in the addres.

All the pages other than the home page are within the index_files folder,
and thus on the home page...the index.htm page, you will have a relative
link address that includes index_files to the other pages. I also said that
if you go to one of the other pages in the site and mouseover the links, you
won't see the index_files as part of the address...cuz you are in the
index_files folder already. Anyway the point is that this is the way the
links should appear vs. pointing at your local C drive as before. Try
looking at the pages and links in FireFox and your will see the full path to
the pages, and perhaps it will be more clear.

You might create a folder on your desktop to just receive your web files
when you Publish to the web. Perhaps call it 'BlissHTMLfiles' or some such.
Then when you are ready to upload and open FileZilla, look for the
'BlissHTMLfiles' folder, open it, and your index.htm file and the
index_files folder will be together.

Interesting. That suggests that the index_files folder is not being
overwritten when she uploads new files. That might also be tied into the
fact that you can browse those files. As to why, I am out of answers. I
would ask her host why.

Well, she tried the fix I suggested and it made no difference, and as Spike
noted it appears that the index_files folder is not being overwritten when
she uploads new files, which is also not as it should be. At this point I
would suggest she ask her web host why you can browse the files in the
index_files folder...I suspect the answer is on their end. I know I am out
of suggestions. And at this point perhaps it doesn't matter...her site is up
and working.

I have submitted a Support Ticket with SurfSpeedy (Jumpline). I'll let you
know what they say - usually takes a day or so.
Thanks

Here's what I got back from my hosting server:
First: I built a website using Publisher 2007. I uploaded it with
FileZilla. all but the fist page addresses include index_files: eg:
http://www.blissdesigns.net/index_files/FAQS.htm
How can I get it to be without the index_files part?

Reply from SurfSpeedy (Sat Feb-21-2009 22:09):
To remove the index_files folder from the path you will need to move the
files down one level so they're in the same folder as your index.htm file.
Then correct the html files' links by removing index_files/ from the urls.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

2nd: Customer comment (Sat Feb-21-2009 23:55):

I uploaded both index_files & index.htm to / using FileZilla. Where should I
have put them?
Thank you.
Anne

Reply from SurfSpeedy (Sun Feb-22-2009 00:12):
Sorry if I wasn't too clear. You need to move all of the html files to /.
Currently they reside in index_files which is why that displays in the url.
Your other files can stay in index_files. You should make these changes in
FrontPage so your urls still work then upload them again.

SO- is there a way to move the files and and change the urls in Publisher?

Thanks guys.

Your question to your ISP has nothing to do with what Rob, Spike and I were
discussing. What were discussing is the fact that you can browse your
index_files folder, and you should not be able to do that. Click the
following link:
http://www.blissdesigns.net/index_files/
Notice that you get a listing of all the files within the index_files
folder. Now click this link:
http://devonviewcaravans.co.uk/index_files/
You get a 403 error...you cannot access the index_files folder. This is what
is supposed to happen, but for some reason your index_files folder can be
browsed.

I guessed that it had to do with how you uploaded the files with FileZilla,
but that wasn't correct. I don't know why, but it is likely a permissions
issue controlled by FileZilla or more likely your ISP. It has nothing to do
with Publisher and how it writes the links.

As per your continuing question about why the address contains the
index_files folder as part of the path, I have done my best to try to
explain that to you in the thread above, but have obviously failed. The
bottom line is this is the way Publisher works, and as long as you use the
supporting folder index_files folder, it will be part of the link. Please
don't try to follow the advice of your ISP and move the pages outside of the
index_files folder. That will just break your navigation system again.
