How do I edit the main spell check dictionary?

J

I assume that all Office products use the same main dictionary and I want to
know how to edit it.

I know that I can edit the Custom.dic dictionary where new words are added,
but I want to remove a word from the main dictionary when it's not a word
I'm ever likely to use, but can be frequent mis-spelling of one that I do.
For example, I regularly make the mistake of typing 'fro' instead of 'for',
yet it doesn't get caught by the spell check because 'fro' is a word that is
included in the dictionary. Since I'm never likely to use the word 'fro',
removing it from the dictionary would improve the usefulness of the
spell-check function.

Any ideas how to do this?

Thanks Garfield.

This doesn't work.

I'm not sure whether you have understood what I'm trying to do or if I've
just cocked something up. The KB article seems easy enough to follow,
although I'm not sure if I've correctly identified the dictionary file -
There are two LEX files in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\PROOF folder. They are MSSP3EN.LEX and MSSP3ENA.LEX. I'm guessing
that one is the US English and the 'A' is the UK English, so I named the
exclude dictionary MSSP3ENA.EXC and saved it in C:\Documents and
Settings\Jonathan Finney\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof.

The exclude dictionary contained just the word 'fro' as the mis-spelling I'm
trying to get flagged and after restarting word and typing 'fro' then spell
checking it, 'fro' still doesn't get flagged (except in green for grammar)
and the same thing happens in Outlook.

I can't see how logically adding this to an exclude dictionary would work.
Are you sure you have understood my question and this will work?

If so, any suggestions as to what I may have done wrong?

I'd try naming the exclude dictionary MSSP3EN.EXC. Did you save
your exclude dictionary as a plain-text file (not a Word file)?
An exclude dictionary is a dictionary with words that the main
dictionary recognizes as being spelled correctly, but that you
want the spelling check to flag as being misspelled.
