How do I install Service Pack 3?

M

Matt H

I've recently upgraded from Office 2000 to Office XP on a Windows XP PC.
The last Office Updats I'd done (via the Office Update web site) was whilst
I had Office 2000 installed.
The Auto Update said that I should install Office XP SP3, before I could
install any of the other Security Updates, so I duly clicked on the SP3 link
and the installation began.
Upon completion, the Update said that it had unsuccessfully completed with
no reason as to why. I tried again using the Full installation via the auto
update and got the same message again.
After searching the Web and Microsoft.com web site I found this user group
and so followed the instructions of the various users, whereby I downloaded
the full SP3 again but via a search instead of the Auto Update. During the
installation, it complained that certain files within the C:\MSConfig
directory had been changed by another process and that SP3 could not install.
I tried a few more times all to no avail.
So I decided to check the Version Numbering in Word, Excel etc. all of which
state that I have Version 2002 SP3!! I don't see how as the SP3 wouldn't
install! I still can't download the other Auto Updates as it still reckons I
need SP3 installing. I'm at a complete loss, and now wish I'd stayed with
Office 2000! Anyone got any more ideas?

Further to my post yesterday, I decided to uninstall Office XP and stick with
Office 2000 Pro.
After re-installing Office 2000 Pro, I ran the Office Update via the web
site, and it installed ALL patches/security updates including Office 2000
SP3!!!
It's therefore got to be a problem with Office XP and SP3, as I had no
problems what-so-ever with the 2000 installation.
I suppose this is another 'un-documented feature' that Microsoft are
'working on'. I wouldn't be surprised if SP4 were to arrive soon, and that
it actually works!
To anyone considering installing Office XP SP3, don't bother, it's not worth
the aggro. Stick with an earlier version of Office, at least you can be safe
in the knowledge that it's more secure and works properly!

I've read and followed this thread through most of the proposed solutions. I
have still been unsuccessful in installing office xp pro sp3 under win xp
pro. I've tried the following steps:
.. client file installation
..full file installation
..Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
..Windows OfficeInstall11 folder delete (MS Installation Troubleshooting
Method)
..temp folder cleanup (MS Installation Troubleshooting Method)
result to all attempts: unsuccessful installation message and error report transmission to Microsoft ..Access KB833857 installation
result: success for this installation, unsuccessful installation for SP3

Can anyone suggest a link or hint that will actually allow installation of
sp3? I have a new installation disk for the application from the enterprise
license site and have not used the software yet. I'm installing on a new
Gateway laptop running office XP pro and very little else.

Thanks,
Frank

Worked for me - after 14 attempts previously failed !

I've cracked it. If you read all of the text on the download page, it tells
you that there are a couple of files that need renaming. Once you do this,
it's fine. I also found that some downloads are better done when finding them
manually rather than with the auto search. Some of them struggled to load,
then came up with a window that said a certain file has already been updated.
Click on IGNORE and it carries on.

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem and its been quite frustrating. I am trying to
download office xp service pack 3. In the middle of installation, it asks for
MS Office CD and when I place it, it cannot find "OUTRET". Please help!! Is
there something wrong with the download?? It seems many people are having
similar problems

I've recently had to re-load my hard drive. I've gone onto www.microsoft.com
and downloaded all the Windows updates. I then asked to search for Office
updates and there is a Service Pack 3. I click to install, it downloads and
installs. Around half way through, it asks for the CD. I insert it, the drive
reads it and carries on with the install. When it has finished it tells me
that the update was unsuccessful. As quite a few people are having the same
problem, is it the download that is erronious? Also all the remaining updates
require Service Pack 3 to be installed.

:

There are thousands of new groups, i.e.,
microsoft.public.publisher.webdesign the one you are in is one of the news
groups.

Usually the instructions to install a SP are given at the download site
where they are offered.

What Service Pack for what program are you interested in?

Excuse my ignorance but firstly, what is a 'newsgroup and where would I
find
it? Secondly, why don't people who reply on forums give concise answers? A
lot of people are having the same installing problem and no-one can give a
direct answer. Any further help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

David,

I think I'm having the same problem, so I will try to explain on
behalf of
the other person. I believe he's talking about Office, not Publisher.
I
am
trying to install Service Pack 3 for MS Office 2000. The update
website
detects that I need SP3 and I tell it to download and install. During
the
installation process, it asks that I place the Office 2000 (SR-1) CD
in my
CD-ROM drive. I do so, and the installation status bar marches to
completion. At the end it tells me that the installation was
unsuccessful,
without so much as a word of explanation. I tried it several times,
each
time doing something a bit differently. For instance, I put the CD in
before
I even began the download to see if that would help. It did not, and
I
have
not been able to come up with any sort of solution. Any ideas?

This question is poorly worded, and so unfortunately doesn't tell me
anything. Please try again.
What version of Publisher is this? Which type of SP is this? What
Office
release and bundle is this? You don't get what message? That what
isn't
where? What is the failure - details here are mandatory - what goes
wrong,
and where and what are the wording of errors?

If NIS 2006 is telling you that you should update your operating system to
SP3, then that would indicate your operating system to be Windows 2000.. the
latest update is SP4 now, and you can get it here..

All applications seem to install except Word. When I try to run Word, the
program asks for a product key which appears to be different than the one
that come with Office Pro.

After trying all of the suggestions above and many more i simply saved the
sp3 to hard drive and then ran it from there and it worked perfectly and i
now have windows installer and frontpage working as it should. I hope this
can save someone else from the time and frustration it took me.

Same problem, originally. I found that if I downloaded SP3 and the
subsequent patches to my computer and installed from there, I was succesful.
When the list of updates is presented in the right column, you can choose
brief information and then more information and you will be directed to a
site with the actual downloadable file. Download it and run from your
hard-drive, worked well for me.

Hope this helps.
