How to change properties in FP 2003 Remote site properites box

C

cowgirl

I'm trying to make some changes to a site that I uploaded originally with FP
2002. The web host supports FP server extensions but I erroneously uploaded
it via their ftp. The web components DO work, though. The problem I'm
having is that I'd like to switch to publishing via the FPSE's option and it
will not let me. In fact, since upgrading to 2003, I haven't been able to
upload to this site at all. I receive the following errors when I try:
Unable to open 'http://www.weidnerpainthorses.com'
Service Error: The web server at http"//the above site does not appear to
have SharePoint Sevice installed. (They DO have FP Server Extensions
installed).

OR
The folder '/weidnerpainthorses.com' does not exist on the remote web
location.
Would you like a folder created at that location?

OR
Unable to open 'http://weidnerpainthorses.com'
1.The web server may not have FPSE's installed.
2.The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3.If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may
be
incorrect.
4.An error may have occured in the web server.

NONE of the above applies to my problem.
I DID type in an incorrect ftp URL but FP will not let me change it in the
Remote Site Properties Box. Please help! I've gone into TOOLS and looked at
every option it offers, nothing will work!

Have your host reinstall the extensions; by uploading via FTP you probably
corrupted them - some FP features do actually work without the extensions eg
the Include Page and Shared Borders (not to the full extent, but they do
function) - you've acknowledged you FTP'd in error.

Make sure your destination web address is the full http://www.yoursite.com
format. or http://members.yourISP.com/~yoursite (etc).

However Sharepoint and the FP Server Extensions are not the same thing.

Sharepoint is a newer technology, and I think will eventually replace the
server extensions in future Frontpage releases.

Hi Andrew,
I have already reinstalled the extensions (numerous times, actually) and
have tried again and again to type in various URLs to the site (including the
ones you suggested). The name of the remote site in my remote site window
always stays the the same.... the wrong URL. I don't know how to change
that. I feel the problem is in my FP program, not with the server. Would it
help to unstall FP and re-install it or would the problems still be there in
my website files?
I've spent hours trying to remedy this and getting nowhere. I might have to
reinstall FP 2002 again!!

Have you tried: File | Publish Site and typing in the correct URL to the
remote site?

Hi Rob,
Yes, I've tried it all and FrontPage is being really stubborn and won't
allow me to change a thing.

In IE go to your site and then File | Edit with FrontPage to see if it will
let you access it.

C

Hi Dan L,
Yes, I've done that, it will let me open the site in FrontPage but as far
as saving any changes I make....... it only wants to save a file on my
computer.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled FP to no avail. The settings, errors,
everything is still there. Sooooooo frustrated. And this isn't even my
site, it's for a client......

When you open the site via IE are you being prompted to login? If not that is why you can only save
back to your HD.

The live/remote site must have the FP extensions installed in order fro you to open or publish to
the live/remote server. Dose the site have the FP extensions installed?

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for bringing that up because it doesn't prompt me at all. Problem
is, the web host does have server extensions installed. Just got off the
phone with them. They can't figure out why I can't access the site either
because they tried it on their computers and it worked.
I've also uninstalled and reinstalled FrontPage, started a new site, with a
new name and tried to upload it from scratch but still get the errors.
Someone mentioned that I possibly have a firewall that's preventing
uploading, but my own site uploads OK (tho it won't via the FPSE option, only
the web host's ftp).
I don't know what else to do......

Re-installing FP is not going to solve the issue. Do you have Norton or any other internet
security/firewall application installed, if so disable it and try to open the site via
http://www.domainname.com.

Hi Thomas,
Still no luck, I both, opened the site live in FrontPage, but again it
didn't prompt for a username/password and I tried again to upload with no
success. Sorry!

Unless you are prompted to login, you do not have the site open in FP, just the page you had open in
your browser.

I wonder if it's because it was uploaded via ftp? When I spoke with the
PowWeb tech today, he said it was possible to upload a site to them via
FPSE's after a site had been uploaded by ftp, but not the other way around.
So he couldn't understand why I couldn't upload to it (either way). He got
into the site with the FP option on his computerl, but I can't. I know must
have a setting wrong in my FP but I can't find anywhere to change my login or
URL. The Remote Site Properties Box always goes back to the same incorrect
ftp URL and it's listed under the 'general' tab
of the site settings window. Any way to get in there and change that? It's
like FrontPage won't connect online at all. At least with this particular
(local) site.

Hi Tom,
Yes, I've tried both the FrontPage SE's option, typing in the URL
http://weidnerpainthorses.com (both with and without the www)
I've also tried using the ftp option using the ftp URL supplied by my web
host, PowWeb. That's where the URL was put in incorrectly and I cannot seem
to change it. It will 'attempt' to find the site when I type it in but
always gives me the error "The folder 'weidnerpainthorses' does not exist on
the remote web location.
Would you like a folder created at that location?" Sometimes the local web
files will show in the left window, but not always. I never gain access to
the remote site.

Run the functions that clear the Cache(.web) files and the FrontPage

Then open My network places ( Sometimes called Network Neighborhood )

Let us know if it helps.
The next step is to delete some registry entries.

I'm reading powweb's unusual method of publishing with FP:

http://kb.powweb.com/questions/298/Publishing-with-FrontPage

It says to not use the www in the url, also pay mind to the way it
authenticates...doesn't seem to be the usual manner FP presents un/pw.

ot: how come your entire index page is a giant image? did you create this
web with FP???

Hi Steve,
I downloaded FP Cleaner and ran it, also went to My Network Places but did
not find any references to the site there. I wish I could say that it
worked, but the unwanted ftp address is still listed and I'm still getting

Hi Rob,
I don't know enough about the inner workings of uploading to know if PowWeb
does it right or not.... just as long as it works for me (it usually does).
The index page is a jpeg (so far) because I'm technically a graphics/fine
artist. For me it's the simplest way in a website, to keep 'things in their
places' and keep fonts intact, etc. This site (especially the index page)
was probably more 'graphic' than others I've done. Yes I did design it in
FrontPage. It's not actually done, yet, which is why I'm a little panicky at
not being able to upload to it!
PS: My artwork can be found at www.bbruckner.com
