How to install Office File Converter Pack (OCONVPCK.EXE)?

G

Graham Mayor

In that case I suspect you are going to have to borrow a Word 2000 CD. I
regret I don't know enough about Windows 98's registry structure to know
what entries are required - though please see Peter's comments on registry
entries.

This already has been done: there was no text converter originally
installed, so I put Txtlyt32.cnv into TextConv folder.
As I wrote in an earlier post, converter does not work: when try save
doc as "MS-DOS Text with Layout", after warning about possible
incompatible chars, it it show dialog: "Microsoft Word can't export
in the specified format. This feature is not currently installed.
Would you like to install it now?" If select "Yes", then it show
prompt for Office 2000 installation CD or browse for installer.

Search for the originally installed version of Txtlyt32.cnv
rename it Txtlyt32.cnv and replace it with the one from my web site.
Or if not found locate TextConv folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv
and put it in there.
When you save a document using the converter you will probably get a
security warning. Click through that warning to save the file.

So what I can do to make work this "MS-DOS Text with Layout"/ "Text
with Layout" converter?
I have no Office 2000 CD anymore, nor setup pack on hard drive.

If those entries appear in the save as list the registry entries
are already in place.

Just confused with this Office File Converter Pack. I just
downloaded and installed latest pack, but it *does not contained*
the Text Converters, since this converter have been retired from
pack. From other side, it seems, the options save as "MS-DOS Text
with Layout" and "Text with Layout" already was present in Word
"Save As" dropdown selector before installation of OCONVPCK.EXE
After uninstallation of Office File Converter Pack, it still
remains there. Santander

1. The key I originally suggested with the "SID" was taken from a Word
2000 installation on Windows 2000.

2. But your comment reminded me that SIDs were probably only used in
Windows NT/2000 and not in Wndows 9x.

3. So I looked at my Windows 98 installation to see what kind of
installation-related keys are in there. I don't have Windows 98 + Word
2000, only Windows 98 + Word 97, so made a guess about the entry you
probably need.

So you probably need to try this key /instead of/ the other ones I
suggested. It's also possible that the CLSIDs/GUIDs in th ley and its
data vary from system to system (although I don't really see why they
would need to). Sorry, but that's the best I can do without actually
installing Office 2000 on Win 98, which I can do if absolutely
necessary, but not right now!

4. I think Graham has covered the other relevant ground, but
a. I was also surprised that you could not install and use the MSDOS
with Layout converter in the same way as other converters.
b. However, the MSDOS Text with Layout converter is handled
differently in Word/Office 2000 setup from the other converters. It's in
a different "branch" of the setup options.
c. that's presumably why the option appears in the "Save As" list of
file formats, even if you have never tried to install the CONVPACK (or
OCNVPACK), and even if you did not enable the converter in Word 2000
setup. /this/ option is set up to be an "install on 1st use" option in
Word 2000. You can see it, but in order to make it work, you have to go
through SETUP again
d. the key I provided is the one that converts the option from being
"install on first use" to "it's installed". I can tell that, because
removing it/re-installing it is enough to toggle Word's behaviour from
one state to the other. However, just installing the key is clearly not
enough - Word will continue as if it the option is installed, but then
discover that the .cnv is not there. So you also need to install that
txtlyt32.cnv

Peter and Graham, thank you for the help! After adding this reg key,
converter finally works. Now we know now that four reg keys is required to
install Text Converter on Win 98.
This converter have no one important feature: it does not create borders for
tables, does not use any characters to draw the borders. I need Unix-style
tables with cells separated with ASCII characters, that usually used in
various tech. documentation.

OK, for Windows 98 I think you need to change

You may need to ensure that the text is ANSI, not Unicode

If that's what you want to do,
1. there may well be a converter that does it (I do not know)
2. you could consider saving as HTML, which retains table structure
info., then transforming that into the format you need. Perhaps there is
a tool to do that (google for HTM2TXT ?)
3. there are converters that do RTF to XML (e.g. google for RTF2XML).
If they retain table structure, you may be able to produce an XSLT that
does what you need
4. Word 2003 or later would let you save as WordProcessingML, which is
XML and can also be transformed.

In cases 2-4 you would need to format all the text using a fixed-width
font to get the layout you needed.

Peter Jamieson

Peter and Graham, thank you for the help! After adding this reg key,
converter finally works. Now we know now that four reg keys is required to
install Text Converter on Win 98.
This converter have no one important feature: it does not create borders for
tables, does not use any characters to draw the borders. I need Unix-style
tables with cells separated with ASCII characters, that usually used in
various tech. documentation.

Peter Jamieson said:

Peter Jamieson

So I need to add this reg key, in addition?

Just confused with this Office File Converter Pack. I just downloaded

side, it seems, the options save as "MS-DOS Text with Layout" and "Text

before installation of OCONVPCK.EXE After uninstallation of Office File

OK, for Windows 98 I think you need to change

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

to

REGEDIT4

You may need to ensure that the text is ANSI, not Unicode

Is the folder name and file name in registry key case sensitive?
I.e.
does the letter case in registry key need be the same case as
folder/file name on drive?(case sensitive)?

I don't think so. But the simplest thing is to try it.

Thanks for tips. I find registry file that need be imported, looks
as
follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Export\MS-DOS Text with Layout]
"Extensions"="asc"
"Name"="MS-DOS Text with Layout"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\Textconv\\TXTLYT32.CNV"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text
Converters\Export\Text with Layout]
"Extensions"="ans"
"Name"="Text with Layout"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\Textconv\\TXTLYT32.CNV"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Text
Converters\Import\MS-DOS Text with Layout]
"Name"="MS-DOS Text with Layout"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Microsoft
Shared\\TextConv\\Txtlyt32.cnv"
"Extensions"="ASC"

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Text
Converters\Import\MS-DOS Text with Layout

and/or possibly

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Text
Converters\Import\MS-DOS Text with Layout

(which contains 3 values:
Extensions
Name
Path

Extensions is set to
ASC

Name is set to
MS-DOS Text with Layout

Path is set to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\txtlyt32.cnv
)

I don't have an entry under the Text Converters\Export key on my
PC,
but if you cannot see an option to Save As using this format, I
would
create one anyway, with the same data values.

FWIW the converter entries for both Word 95 and Word 97 have
Export
keys under registry paths with equivalent names (e.g.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Word\7.0\Text
Converters\Export
)

I am not even certain that these filters are available any
more.
You
can however download the converter and registry patch from
my web
site. It will still work albeit with a security warning.

How to install Office File Converter Pack (OCONVPCK.EXE)? I

Do I need to have the Office installation CD if install this
converter, or just this setup package OCONVPCK.EXE?

When I unpacked the OCONVPCK.EXE self-extractor file, I
find no
any
text converters there.
listed if this setup.

thanks.
